Whether you're into jungle/breakcore or not, there's something for every proud Canuck to snicker at in the samples here ( http://sublightrecords.com/media.html )
from Aaron Funk's latest Venetian Snares record 'Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole' (on Sublight).
The Burton Cummings sample was just too appropriate.
Oh, the beats are good too.

I'm an American and I'm here anyway.
But I still remember those great Guess Who songs with Burton Cummings & Randy Bachman...no time...

ah good ole canadian electronic music
i must check out the new venetian snares release. i think he's the guy who did the album of sounds using microphones "inserted" into weird places with his GF? if im wrong than woosh i look like a freak.
is the group Manitoba from winnipeg too? if so winnipeg has a pretty good stranglehold on the canadian scene.
let's try to review some canadian artists in their cities:
these are the only ones i can think of for experimental music.
Vancouver- Sekoya, Gavin Froome
Winnipeg- Venetian Snares, Manitoba?
Toronto- the New Deal, King Sunshine, Ivanna Santili, Pocket Dwellers, Mr. Tunes
Ottawa- NERO
Montreal- Tigga, Afrodiz
Halifax- Jimmy Swift Band, Buck 65
look how much ground i covered geographically. i must've missed a ton of groups but im curious to hear what others know.
and my cousin's photograph is used on the backside of the newest live Guess Who album. it's pretty cool!
and btw if you're in vancouver and you're looking to collaborate with a producer/musician please PM me and we should chat.

nope. Now called Caribou, he's from Dundas, Ontario (near Hamilton).Mr. Tunes wrote:is the group Manitoba from winnipeg too?
Some of these VSnares clips are good fun. I didn't hear any Crash Test Dummies in there.
I wonder how hard it is to get clearance for samples from Guy Maddin movies?

Hello all.
I spent a week in The Peg, and felt oddly isolated. I dont think I was there long enough to gain a true understanding of the sheer hell of the place, oh well. These tracks are interesting and now I will look into those that Mr.Tunes listed. By the way Mr.Tunes, I see Mr.Tunes is a T.O. based entity, yet Mr.Tunes is in Vankhoover (for collabs). Hmmmmmmm....
Well I typed Mr.Tunes 5 times now, time to put on some Anne Murray and call it a night....yawn...

Ummm.. speaking of Canada and breakcore... just thought I'd plug my mate's record label. It can be found at http://www.heresmycardrecords.com.
It's all pretty wrong stuff.. breakcore, jungle + a bit of evil metal.. and all the releases are on credit card sized CDs

I was wondering about the Stompin' Tom samples too.shamann wrote: I wonder how hard it is to get clearance for samples from Guy Maddin movies?
A lot of under-the-radar independents don't bother with clearance for movie samples though... imagine how much a five-minute song would have cost Skinny Puppy in the 80's.
I think Guy would be cool with it anyway (especially in this context) - I met him some time ago when we were working on the campaign for the film in question and he's not your typical industry type.

i really dont think there is a problem sampling canadian artists because it is a way of respecting them and giving value to our country's culture. the problem is however that canadian labels are basically american labels and many of them are owned by americans. so our policies wouldnt really change from the states. BUT in terms of file sharing we take a totally different view than the americans and we have a european approach to Intellectual Property rights. we feel that people are free to explore the internet and such. i think some of this mentality should apply to sampling and i dont think that it would get you thrown in jail
who is interested in working on a remix with me, it's Bruce Cockburn's If I had a Rocket Launcher. I think it's a very relevant song to the times of today and i want to "bring it up to date" sonically.

I used to live at Bathurst/College (and Bloor/Bathurst and Dundas/Bathusrt) so yes I know the place a little.
And why not? I would be into a remix with you. You are right, it is timely. Whats that he says "...some son of a bitch will die...". Heavy yes but these are heavy times

ha cool. i like that part of toronto a lot. you werent too far from long and mcquade, that's important. here in vancouver i have TWO L & M's within 15 minute walk.Morgaxx wrote:I used to live at Bathurst/College (and Bloor/Bathurst and Dundas/Bathusrt) so yes I know the place a little.

i found Rocket Launcher to be a difficult song to prepare for a remix on a grid. but you must find the version that he does in a live show where it's just him on acoustic guitar and vocals. i think that's ideal rmx material.

2 L&M's 15 minutes walk! Is that 15 min. from one to another? Or are you in the middle and its a 30 min. walk between the 2?
When was the last time you were at the Bloor L&M? They have a store 2 doors over from a store
1 is the guitar/bass store, the other is the important store (kidding). I'm in the Beaches these days so its kinda far (never too far!). However if I walk 15 min I can find all sorts of Indian instruments at the India Bazarre (the biggest collection of stores/restaurants/culture all Indian/Afghan/Pakistani in N.A.).
Wandering of topic? sorry...(wow thats Canadian eh?)
I will look into that version, by the way

yeah this should be relevant? i mean the topic deals with canadian electronic music?
if you were to walk between the two long and mcquades it would be about 30 minutes. i think what happened is they bought a store called Ward Music, a competitor and that's why they are so close. but the funniest part is that Tom Lee Music is in between the two of them. Tom Lee is a fairly comprehensive music store for western canada and has basically everything.
i was in the L and M bloor during the christmas break time. i dont mind walking down two doors because they made the place so big. the funny thing is, all they have to do is buy out that tiny convenience store and they could connect all locations. but i dont think the price of owning that property can justify them doing this.
I bought a novation K-Station there on blowout for 250(down from 1200). also the year before i think i got my roland mc-09 loop station for about 150 on christmas blowout.

I never seem to get to the x-mas blowout. Good for you!
When in Winnepeg, I went to the L&M. It may be a sad hell to live in (according to that guy), but they do have an L&M.
