hey :) I'm trying to get a long sustain with the guitar patched right to the computer.
Its up in my host and trying a few vst's but I'm not much of a guitarist so not sure of a good vst effects chain to get Fripp like sustains 20sec I wish there was a vst for guitar with infinite sustain.
Anyway I got lots to choose from so any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanx

Try Db tempo delay its free or for an actual Fripp sound got to the elogoxa website the link is in the effects menu taskbar and it is modelled on Fripps delay. Ellotronix its called ithink(also free)
fell in line with the shore break, here breathe the first stroke of sea spray

There's also an Ellotronix XL:

Yeah, I'd like to know too. Most of us just use compressors with long release settings or insane amounts of distortion (which compresses) to get our sustain...

'Course, one could use violin bow or an e-bow -- or hey, just develop good vibrato technique -- but this is the effects forum.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

thats the problem I was having I'm just gunna burn up this Ellotronics and try it downstairs
I hope it dosn't just repeat I want it to hold the note for 20sec at a time
I'll let ya know if it works

I don't see how to do that without using a compression pedal/effect unless you're doing something like audio to midi..

sustain isn't delay.

i once got an insane sustain by feeding a standard delay into 'pitchcloud.ens' , a reaktor ensemble ...

it's grain based , i believe , and does some filter sweeping as well ...

i fed an guitar .wav into it , and was quite pleased w/ the results ...

If you want vst - any good compressor will increase sustain.

If you need rrrreeeeaaaallllyyyy long sustain - try Fernandes Sustainer or Sustainiac

Fripp has used different techniques over the years. I think these days he uses a Fernandez Sustainer system in his guitar. Way back in the dinosaur age, he used to use a small amp in his setup to have natural feedback augment the sustain.

Compression is always good to sustain (but watch for excessive noise at the end of your notes at extreme settings), and most distortion has compression side-effects (as mentioned).

You can also use an Ebow, also mentioned, though it requires adapting to its technique.

use a DI as opposed to plug in the line or mic in
the impedence mismatch kill sustain

I always find that limiting/compression and distortion and solidbody guitars are the keys to long sustain. I have an Epi SG bass and the sustain on that thing is annoyingly long sometimes. Admittedly, Im no bass player so my technique sucks, but I played a knockoff violin(hollowbody) bass and it had probably half the sustain of my epi....

For a solid natural sustain (ala Santana used to do) there is no replacement for yanking up the amp all the way, and having the guitar within a few feet of the speaker cabinet at the critical "feedback" distance & angle.
