I'm not meaning to cause offence here, as I have visited the site and had a read of the boards. But generally, when you open a website based around an artistic personality, you take your chances, lumps and all.
People in general are quite selfish when it comes to their art and to expect people to join up a board based around someone elses ego, is really a bit rich in my opinion, no matter what services you may offer and how important or knowledgeable you think you are.
To make it clear though. I'm not a leecher as I have only simply visited the site. This is just my view on the matter and if I am mistaken I'll happily retract what I've said.

No offence taken, but i think if one visits a site and downloads some stuff its not to much to ask to leave a message. Just my opinion though.

OK...what about a private FTP or something? I'm not sure what resources he has at his disposal, but I guess if the bandwidth is expensive there must be a better way of offering downloads. I don't think it's a good bet to try and trade downloads/bandwidth for more forum threads or guestbook entries though. Why open the site up like that in the first place if you have high expectations of others? People will always download free files like that...so really it's a matter of either biting the bullet and relying on the good social nature of other people, or making the downloads exclusive and not tied to forum membership?

Speaking as someone who grudgingly signed up for those boards merely to try a plugin that Jack referenced here at KVR -- I agree. :D

Well, no one is as interested in your art as you are...generally speaking, unless you're David Bowie or someone !
This is why indie music is not popular music. We exist in a kind of vacuum for the most part.
Great that he's making music, but aren't we all? Make as many albums as you like I reckon, but don't expect a gaggle of strangers to want to make an effort to talk about it !!
It's all well and good to try to create a mysterious musical persona, but I think one must put it into some sort of realistic perspective. To be fair to Jack Dark, he does actually stray away from mystery !!! I was really trying to make this into more of a general discussion about musical personality creation
Just my 2 cents...speaking as someone who lives in the music wilds himself and who regularly checks out member web pages, but doesn't expect the same in return.

forgive my ignorance, but is the whole site just about one person?

His website is...and the forum is centred around him...but in fairness, does include other topics. But, basically..yes.
If Jack is around...care to comment?
Just generally speaking: an artist website is an interesting thing really...there's a fine line between twee and factually interesting a lot of the time.

Jack's a cool guy with cool stuff! 8) I'm not savvy with Guestbooks and all that still, but I try to post and encourage Jack in some small way when I'm there.

Heck, the guy pointed me to some Train Sim stuff - so it's the least I could do. ;)

like his aesthetic, tops for creative use of autotune (or ?)

personlly, it's very ~'cathartic' to have the webspace to post all my past tribulations and/or efforts, but got over the 'i'm being leeched' after releasing se plugs for a bit. leaving further commenting for people who actually believe in buying music.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

Hey, do as you feel is necessary. I just think, when you put yourself 'out there', you just have to be able to take the heat. Going on about leeching and bandwidth and threatening to pull some measly downloads is like a storm in a teacup really. It's the internet for crying out loud ! You put it out there, you must expect this sort of stuff ! Sheesh...

I'm sure he's a cool guy. I don't know him.
Everybody needs some encouragement. From those who have webspace to those who sweat night after night in their bedrooms toiling over microscopic beats.
