VST compatibility in Audition

I have found a somewhat tedious way of discovering whether or not certain VST effects are truly compatible with Audition 1.5. (not talking about unsupported here). I also posted this in the Adobe forums, but noone seems to read those :)

1. Install/place your VST in your plugins folder
2. Start up Audition & Click Refresh effects list
3. Start the Windows Task Manager (right click taskbar or hit ctrl-alt-del)
4. Click the Processes tab, then Image Name (to sort by name)
5. Find the Audition.exe process
6. Close Audition normally (the X in corner of window).
7. Look at the Task Manager, if you have a "bad" VST the Audition.exe process will not close (end, die, disapear).
8. Note: If Audition is hanging then select it in the Task Manager and click End Process

I have found (in general) that VSTs created from SynthEdit will cause Adobe to hang like this (and also tend to render Audition a lil more unstable).
For a quick verification on this try loading Baxxpander (this fails for me). :(

Also since I know hink will respond to this I want to totally thank him for the silent tracks multitracking tip (I just found it today, wow cool) :)

Nice birrman. Thanks for the tip. I just love Audition. It replaced Sound Forge for me after I discovered it supported VST FX and had multitracking. However, I think Adobe could do one better by making it a full VST. This would offer a critical challenge to Acid Pro with it's reliance on Microsoft Frame .NET

I agree ZZ, I wouldn't even want a sequencer in Audition, just the ability to play and record a VSTi....

oh and better automation :)

Post

Exactly. I like the graphics in Audition especially. And I like working directly on waveforms, which is something I had grown used to with Acid.

audition rocks but it's VSt implementation and real time effect implementation sucks.

Great looking and fast app for audio work though.

Good tip! I wondered why it was hanging around the Processes box after closing (I haven't used VSTs in it recently). Hmm, makes it sound like a drunk :hihi:

Where can I find the silent tracks multitracking tip?

Can you explain what this means? I think I understand and I beleive Audition may already have this functionality, but I'm not familiar with the acid-lingo

Do you have some vst plugs loaded? I think even without using them, a vst can cause this hang (like what you are describing).

And hinks tip
hink wrote:What I like is how you can create blocks in the tracks and when recording it will only record in the blocks. To do this just go to edit view and generate silence and send it to the multi view. Then use split and remove clip to precisely have the blocks where you want.

So how is this cool? Arm several tracks for recording and create blocks for verses, choruses and bridges in different tracks. Then when you hit record when it comes to the verse it will record on the verse track, when you reach the chorus it will record on the chorus track and so on. Use this with loop recording and multiple takes then you can swap in and out takes for each part and transition points will be as consistant as your playing. I love this for vocals... Wink
way cool. thanks again hink

Yeah good tip if I ever need record anything externally :singer:

I don't have anything loaded at the moment, not since I set up a separate folder for use of vsts in Audition.

ok, say you have your entire song playing. in the loop explorer menu in Acid, you can just click on any wav loop, and it automatically previews it IN TIME with the rest of the project. a great way to audition loops. as I understand in audition, you need to load the loop first then stretch it. Sorry if I'm wrong! (and please let me know!)
yes, this is a nice feature. what appz have this besides acid?

live, although not as effective in beat detection.

sonar and fruity 5 do it for already acidized files only.
whoa FL5 does it too.. nice :D
