Hello.

I hate the Piano Roll in Sonar 4 but love it in FL Studio. Also the FL stepsequencer with the possiblity to "send to piano roll" is lovable.

Examples:
1. I can´t find a way to strech several notes simultaneously.
2. Annoying swithing between select and draw mode.
3. Right click opens midi effects which is totally senseless. (Should open ex. selection between draw, select and erase)
4. I find it difficult to move, cut and stretch notes in overall.

Sonar 4 is perfect for audio recording, which is not the case in FL Studio IMO. Sonar 4 comes with the incredible freeze tool, so CPU/RAM problems are solved.

Does anybody else hate Sonar Piano Roll? Have you found any means to overcome this?

Regards,

Mike

Project 5
rewired into Sonar

OR your choice
FLStudio rewired into Sonar
FLStudio as DXi in Sonar
FLStudio as wrapped VSTi in Sonar

I have Sonar 3 -- but my comments should still apply.

All you have to do is hit "S" for select and "D" for draw.

The Draw tool allows you to draw, move the start (w/o affecting the end) times, move the end time, move notes up/down/left/right -- sometimes no need to change tools.

My 2 cents

But when you've been introduced to working methodology that cuts this out, it IS annoying. Extremely annoying.

Indeed it is. Im sooo much faster when editing in FL Studio compared to Sonar pianoroll.

i can't abide the idiosyncracies of the piano roll editing in FLStudio
but it's true for me Sonar's work model is even more foreign

this all has an awful lot to do with where one's work habits have been established.
I know people who came up with Sonar who are proficient and fast with that piano roll editor.

if you find a system that suits you what's the point of complaining that some other system doesn't suit you. it's always awkward to switch models.

it should be a non-issue with Rewire and the ability to use FLS as a VSTi or Dxi in Sonar

I somewhat agree here, I like how fl studio has combined paint and delete to the mouse buttons. However, I think that sonar is more powerful once you wrap your head around it. For instance alt+left click will delete in the piano roll if you want to quickly delete notes without having to select them first.

I prefer using FL studio for sketchin out ideas, and Sonar 4 when I want to polish something up, as the slip editing in sonar is far superior imo..

At this time, i think that's the best solution to combine power with workflow. But i might prefer P5 instead of FL for that.

I wonder if T2 will be so good as it seems, intuitive (fast) and powerful at same time.

Sonar 4 does need to rework the PR. I'm going blind looking a those small midi control lines.

You can change the magnification under the vertical scroller! Make 'em thick! :)

If you think the Piano Roll is bad in Sonar 4, you should try Digital Performer 4's. It makes Sonar 4's quick and simple in comparison.

I do like FLStudio's Piano Roll, it was one of my favorite aspects of working with it. However, Sonar is much better for working on drum tracks as it allows you to easily route seperate MIDI tracks to the same instrument. Yes, you can do that in FL as well, but it's not as fast and simple as Sonar.

Maybe someone should develop an alternative Piano Roll in MFX, sort of like how the absolutely killer OPT MIDI editor by the now defunct GenieSys made Acid Pro 4's MIDI somewhat useful.
