hi there

i've just heard about kyma, and all i can say is WOW
those mp3 examples are just awsome!!!

i've got 2 questions:
1. are there any similar programs to kyma
2. can kyma work without capybara (hardware acceleration)

1. Max/MSP is probably the closest you'll get (though Bidule might be better for the crazy FFT stuff).
2. No.

I'm interested in how Kyma does resynthesis incidentally, but I'll save that for another thread rather than hijack this one. :P

Kyma needs the hardware, but there are some software packages which will do some of what the Kyma does, eg MAX/MSP, CSound, Supercollider et.c.

No, Kyma will not work without the Capybara. That's the DSP unit that gives the software its power.

Nothing does what Kyma does, though you can get lots of things that do a little of what Kyma does. There are lots of software additive resynthesizers out there: Cameleon, Cube, Vertigo...and Max/MSP is similar to Kyma in its "building-block" approach.

I have a Kyma, and it is pretty danged cool. I use it for most of my software synthesis/effects these days. Still, the MP3s on the Kyma site are a bit old, and there is software stuff that can do much of what you hear. However, you get what you pay for, and only Kyma is Kyma.

Kyma is it. It is not talked about much as it is so expensive. It really is ahead of its time.

The next best thing is.. well? none.

MAX/MSP impressive but time consuming. Check out my web site for a free software program I created with MAX/MSP http://www.geocities.com/sacredresonance22 .

I am currently learing Supercollider at UNI, very indepth code. But allows real fine tuning.

These two programs go away from the MACRO synthesis that cubase and other programs offer. Allows the user to fine tune nearlly everything!

Hehe, it's how it does it so nicely without messing up the time domain that I'm interested in. Usually there's a trade-off (increasing the FFT size gives nicer frequency representation but 'smears' the time domain), something which I assumed was an inherent part of the process.

I love my Kyma to ,

You can keep max/msp Ill do my work in something thats flexible and sounds GREAT whilst its doing it.

Max is much harder work imho.

Really? Guess there's hope for me yet then. :D

I found Max to be a litte beyond me at present, so its nice to know that Kyma is a little more managable.

I think in terms of capability Csound is probably the next in line. But Csound is harder again!

Well, to put it in perspective...I couldn't build something in Max or CSound to save my life. But I can get my head around Kyma. It can be as deep as you need it to be. I mainly build upon the examples included by dragging in Prototypes (modules) and experimenting. Yet I have also built some things from the ground up...a nice additive vocoder, for instance. Some folks who are much smarter than I am can dive down to the bottom level of Kyma and write their own Prototypes...Me, I am content to use the "Lego approach" for now...

Doppelmangler can do some spectral stuff similiar to the Kyma. Check out http://www.whitenoiseaudio.com/doppelmangler/

i just got my kyma about a month ago.

i've studied synthesis in school (have my degree in it) and know csound, max/msp, supercollider, etc...

i can do what kyma can do in those things.. but not as easily and that, to me is where the art lies.

it used to take me several months to program and compile 1 minute of sound in the above environments. now with kyma, i am more like hours (sometimes minutes) away... it is completely satisfying and extremely deep. and sounds like butter.

i'm pretty much into voice conversion...
can kyma do this?
