Anybody know of a way of running multiple soundcards with the one comp/host?

I've got various soundcards of different varieties and was wondering whether it's possible to use all of them.

Are there any host's that support this?

From what I can tell, Cubase and Ableton don't seem to :(

any clues?

Thanks in Advance :D

You can configure both of them under windows and make sure they work. Then you can configure your sequencer to record sound from differt sources (inputs) fomr the different sound cards simultaniously.

Ok, thanks for the reply! I have both an audiophile PCI and a FIREWIRE which both work fine, but I can't get them both working simultaneosly...

I've been reading differing accounts though, and thought kvr would be the place to post to clear this up. Some people say you can't have 2 ASIO sound cards running at once unless they are the same model. My example lends to this.

Any clues re that?

Most hosts won't allow you to run multiple sound cards unless they use the same digital clock source.

Two sound cards running at a nominal 44.1KHz, for example, will each be very slightly off that sample rate, and so they will drift with respect to one another. At some point that will create a situation where one card is ahead of another by a whole processing block - card A will be ready for the host to send block 42, while card B hasn't asked for block 41 yet. It's very hard for a host to deal with that situation in an acceptable manner, so they don't.

Hence the availability of sound cards with more than two outputs, which is generally the way to go.

Don't do it my way.

To my knowledge only cards that have interfaces that present the multiple cards as a single interface to the host can be used this way. They don't necessarily have to be the same card. The audio driver/mixer application that comes with the master card must have the option to synch the other cards.

Basic cards, like Sounblasters and onboard MB Codecs etc.. typically don't have this option. Although some hack drivers are available to do this to some extent.

Medium range cards tend to have drivers that only work with identical cards. My Delta 1010 for example can recognize and present up to 4 cards to the host as a single interface.

High end stuff like Lynx AES16 and some of the RME cards can actually hook up to lots of different stuff, even other manufacturers.

This is a generalization, but in most host cases you only load one ASIO interface. The interface is what determines how many cards are involved.

All i know is that if you got 2 audiophiles PCI, syncing is no problemo.
And we can take this huge universe and put it inside a very tiny head, you fold it.

Cooledit and (I think) N-Track Studio will let you use multiple, differing soundcards simultaneously.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

With v2 of Wuschel's Asio4All in EinStein mode, most hosts CAN cope with more than one...
My MusicCalc is temporary offline.
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. :borg:

duh!! that's because the f**king driver presents a single interface to the host. The host doesn't cope with anything. Also, those drivers can be hit or miss. Some people have luck with them, others can't get them rolling. YMMV

Covered most of these questions in a previous thread

Thanks heaps birrman! And everyone else. I did try the search feature before posting a new thread but to no avail. Does KVR have "exact phrase" or advanced search options (that I am missing coz I'm stoopid!!)?

Cheers People!!

it does have a search and you can combo words using AND, but not an easy topic to search on, I just remembered those questions coming up a few weeks ago

YOU GUYS ROCK!! KVR never fails!!

I now have:

X-station + AP2496 PCI + AP FireWire

All outputs presented to Ableton 4 as freely configurable audio outs, by use of asio4all v2.4 - there's some clicking and popping which I'll have to iron and out lots of testing to do, I'll post any conclusions once I've done it.

Cheers. :D

Ok, by hit and miss, do you possibly mean clicks randomly though the audio perhaps? (just wondering if you have personal experience?). Anyway, that's what I'm still trying to deal with. I have my devices all working fine except for the odd random click and pop which doesn't seem to be resulting from CPU, or buffer size or any setting really.. bummer :(

I love how the simple mode shows Bush though!!!
