Anyone know some good effects to make brass sound a little more convincing.

Clone ensemble might work, but I have the best luck with duplicating the instrument part and individually changing the velocity and timing of each note so that every part deviates a bit from the initial line. I also detune each part a small amount, and then put a little reveb over it. Sounds passable anyways.
I use the brass samples for ds-404, btw.

not familiar with "Clone ensemble" is that a midi or audio plugin?

audio plugin, I think it's in the database here. There is a waves plug I've seen like it that makes multiple voices, but I don't know if that will work, and I'm sure it's a lot more expensive. Both are audio. You might also try a bit of chorus on the horns.

NDC has a 'Metalization Delay' I've been using for some brass. Pretty sweet with the right settings. 8)

For any sort of ensemble, the most realistic thing is to orchestrate the ensemble as a group of separate, individual parts. Do the adjustments ouroboros mentioned, but also give each part its own sound and place in the mix. If possible, use different sounds for different parts, even if they're both the same instrument; two separate trumpet sounds combined sound more real than giving both the same sound. If you can find or fake legato samples, it's even better! It's a major pain in the ass to do all this, but the final result will be far superior to any "Brass Ensemble" patch.

A simpler alternative is to combine an ensemble patch with just a few individual parts as above. This is probably the best way, overall.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!
