Im after drums that sound like those found on songs like rjd2 - chicken-bone circuit, dj shadow - mutual slump and others were drum loops probably are lifted from old jazz records. I like the sounds of the snares and kicks from those, also the crashes have a very much longer decay than those found on for example drum kits from hell which i didnt much like.
Ive tried crate digging for those kind of drums but stockholm doesnt offer very good crate digging conditions. Here, 2nd hand records are all 80s synth pop. So im thinking of buying a 12-bit sampler and some good drum kits. Im hearing bfd is popular, does it sound anything like drums from above mentioned songs?

Well, i'm kinda in the same dilemma. I love those retro beats and the way they sound. I have loads of loops like that, but i don't like using them, so i have started a quest to reproduce them with programming those beats with individual samples.
To be honest, i haven't had much luck, yet. I have a few drum librarys, but they are either "too metal" or "too pop" oriented. And i haven't been able to reproduce it with clever EQ, maybe because i'm not very clever with EQ
But, there is one library that has my eyes open, and that's Toontracks's (makers of Drumkit From Hell) new Superior Custom & Vintage

Have you tried NS Kit 7?
There are a few drum kits on KVR that could be pulled apart and reused. (I've done a couple of sfz format mappings but I prefer rock, so we probably aren't interested in the same kits.)
And there are a few different takes on Geoff Khan's Live Kit 7 you might want to try.

You should be able to do somehting similar with an expressive acoustic kit and some clever processing. Throw them through a vinyl or amp simulator and run that through a compressor and gate. I've had pretty good luck with that myself. If you compress it heavily through a single band stereo compressor you should be able to approximate that sound pretty closely.

It's quite amazing (mm?) what you can do with a few effects...

A few people (myself included) have found the ns_minikit just the thing for lo-fi breakbeats. You can download it from the site.
