Hi, I am a guitar player and want to start recording. I downloaded Audacity but I want some more effects like distortion, overdrive etc. My amp is terrible and I dont have any effect pedals so I just want to plug my guitar into microphone input, record and then add the effects. Please help me find some to download. Thanks.

Check out Kristal Audio Engine.. it's a free multi-track recording program with VST plugin support built in... it's a bit more fully-featured than Audacity.

Later on, you can step up to something like Cubase, Tracktion, FL Studio, or Cakewalk Home Studio/Sonar... the basic versions of some of these can be had for <$100.

yeah, i agree with garret, krystal looks a little better than audacity - although i haven't ever used either, until tonight.
i'm not having much luck getting some plugins to work right in audacity right now, but there seems to be a lot of help files and tutorials on the website.

I don't have any experience with this program, but as a general user of hosts I may be able to help.
Gimme a few minutes to get it up and running...

I really think audacity is meant to be more of an audio editor than a tracker.
As far as kristal being too confusing, well, you're gonna have to learn something dude...There's very little that you're going to just pick up and be a pro at.
It's not a free program, costs 35 dollars or something, but Maxx Claster's Oxywavez Live very useful and user friendly for guitarists. It supports VST effects and runs off of both ASIO and DirectX audio drivers. So you should be able to use it without any problems no matter what kind of sound card you're using.
peace!

Its actually an alright program, I just wish I could get more effects to work. I dont no why. I followed the instructions and put them in the plugins section.
