Soundfont Editor?

Hi,
Since I don't really like any of the current samplers on the market as they just feel too bloated on features (Halion) or I hate the interface (Kontakt/Kompakt), I've decided that SFZ+ or similar is going to be the sampler for me. Pursuant to that, I've converted some old Akai discs to soundfonts, and they work well so far.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find an editor for soundfonts that will work without a Soundblaster card. Can anyone recommend a way that I might create or edit soundfonts without one? I tried the demo for Awave, but it's pretty limited, and there's no way in hell that I'll pay that price for what little I want to do. All I'm trying to do is load pre-looped samples into a multi-sample formation, and alter global amplifier envelopes. I don't even really need multi-layer velocity switching or anything, since I'm sampling old hardware synths anyway.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
(stu.macQ)

If you've enough RAM to load the sample sets, use sfz and Steve Holt's sfZed. Otherwise you're best off searching the forum for previous threads on this topic.

This question has only been asked about 1000 times already...

Anyway, I second the motion for sfz and sfZed. You can always convert your sfz patches into sf2 using Extreme Sample Converter $40USD.

Kill two birds with one stone. Vsampler 3. Best VST sampler and soundfont editor/importer/converter/creator all rolled into one. Needless to say, I love this sampler. I just converted all my Battery kits into soundfonts using Vsampler so I could use them in Reason's NN-XT.stu.macQ wrote:Hi,

Thanks for everyone's help. For what it's worth, I did try a search before posting (several of them, actually), but apparently my search parameters were too broad to get any useful results (in a reasonable period of time).

Yeah, I personally think it would probably be a good idea to pin a few of the more common thread questions, like...stu.macQ wrote:Thanks for everyone's help. have you tried shortcircuit??
excellent sampler, perfect interface, beautiful sound, and can load SF2 as well at loads of others including rex.

hm. tried searching for previous discussions about soundfont editors, and although I know it has been mentioned once or twice in the past year, I get fifty pages of results that don't have any mention of soundfont editors - well, frankly I am not going to search every post for more than ten pages; John, do you know how to make the search engine return results for phrases rather than just anything that mentions the word soundfont or editor? I tried all the tricks I know of (boolean) but it doesn't seem to work....
frankly i don't blame you, stu, even just scanning topics and jumping into threads that look promising, I couldn't get through fifty pages of that; I couldn't find anything either

Awave Studio will let you edit soundfonts with any soundcard. Unfortunately it's quite expensive at around $150, but then you get a pretty decent samleconverter also. There's a demo available at http://www.fmjsoft.com

Extreme Sample Converter is excellent at what it does. It doesn't allow modifying zones themselves -- i.e. you can't change the keyboard map. But you can adjust amp & filter parameters for any zone, and it has a fabulous loop editor, the best I've ever seen.
Of course, it's also great for converting between formats.

Yeah it can be a bit tricky to get good results with the forum's search engine. It also doesn't help that some people ask about SF editors/editing by using a variety of terms. Just looking for the word "soundfont" and checking "Search title only" comes up with about 40 or so threads of which it seems about 10 of them are about SF editors.spoonboiler wrote:John, do you know how to make the search engine return results for phrases rather than just anything that mentions the word soundfont or editor? do what I did, get a used soundblaster card for next to nothing then use Vienna - works out cheaper than all the major soundfont progs

Never ever dare to ask any stupid questions in a forum again. What the hell do you think are disussion boards for? Behave!
Talking about stupid questions: Anybody knows a working link for sfZed? Or does the knowledge about this only belong to a few super-insiders? I know, it's "beta"... whatever that means nowadays
Ciao.
