2 things....
1) Midi is a standard, so as such manufacturers commit to that standard so that they don't lose functionality...and hence sales...start messing with a standard and it soon loses its reason for being used. Even add-on better bits still mess with the standard - and we'd be in the shit if all manufacturers suddenly decided they were going to go back to using their own communication systems.
2) As to why that didn't become the de facto midi standard... who knows....why does English cheese taste good and French cheese tastes like smegma? One of life's mysteries.
