Thought I would post this job listing for everyone's perusing. Noticed it while checking for video gigs, thought I would post it. It was listed under "fully paid gigs", so it sounds like if the guy likes the stuff, you'll get some do-re-mi out of the deal. Hope this works out for any of you who are interested....

That's how most of these film music library people are. Just make up some names, and tell them you sound like them. For example, my biggest influences are Stevie Ray Wonder & The Oklahomos (actually a band, but really sounds like it shouldn't be). Whether they've heard of the band or not, they'll pretend that they do.dystonia_ek wrote:"Tell me exactly who you sound like"

I know, it just always makes me laugh. I'm doing some library music on the side right now, but the people just wanted me to do what I normally do so I wasn't asked that question.
I just find it a little tragicomic...

Yeah, my standard response to "What do you sound like?' is "Here (give CD). Now press play.", or "We're playing at 11:00 PM at _____. Should I put you down for the guest list?", although not as much anymore, since I'm kinda done with my playing out days....dystonia_ek wrote:I know, it just always makes me laugh. It's worth noting that as of this morning (4.6.05) the website for the place isn't online which makes me wonder just how well the rest of the organization works. Must be having trouble getting the corporation out of the desk drawer today...

Yeah, just tried it, and yep, didn't load. It is worth trying at some later date though, I would imagine though. For one reason or another people sometimes have server problems, even the big boys. Not shilling for the guy, but maybe that's his deal right now, or it could be like you said, desk drawer business. Thing is, I've had really good luck with Mandy.com, you can't just post a paid job on there, they check you out and make sure you ain't FOS, and that you pay people on time, etc. Otherwise they make you post under lo/no/deferred pay, most of which is a wasteland of wasted time. Never had a problem with ANY of the gigs I've found on there, although I have problems with "gigs" from other sites. Of course, though, always get a vibe from the people, when talking to them/interviewing. You need to interview them, just as they are interviewing you....& you're right, for first impressions, this doesn't bode well.TexasMusicForge wrote:It's worth noting that as of this morning (4.6.05) the website for the place isn't online which makes me wonder just how well the rest of the organization works. TexasMusicForge: My thoughts exactly.
also notice:
EDIT: Tkmattson: He meant the poster, not mandy.com
also notice:
"I'm"....sounds like a one man band although it might not be.Music library is seeking songs (all styles) with vocals to add to library and represent non-exclusively. At this time, I'm especially in need of songs in the following genres:

I'm pretty sure the "I'm" in that regard would refer to a producer compiling a music library for film/commercial use. Doesn't sound like he's a musician himself, which also is something to take into consideration....Maybe I should actually do what he's trying, as in produce a library, since I am a musician/engineer/filmmaker, and have some contacts amongst all the fields. Hmmmm.Armadillo wrote:TexasMusicForge: My thoughts exactly.

Mandy.Com sounds like something a spammer would think up – Where have I come across lighthouse before?
Is there not a better name?

"Tell me exactly who you sound like" is actually not such a stupid question. If you imagine what a music library is you will understand. They get requests from clients who have never heard your name. The client will not ask for "Please give me music from Sepheritoh", but rather say "Give me something for my corporate video that has an dramatic feel, for example Don Davis". The librarian have to do a search on the computer index for a song. If your songs are listed under some unknown band's name it will never come up as a choice.
Giving your CD to them and ask them to classify it themselves is likely to be a sure way to send it to the dustbin. Even if they classify it, they might not put it where you wanted it.
The worst scenario is having a wrong classification and the client ask for country music and your track comes up, but it is ambient. The client will have a tantrum which will result in the library pulling your music from the list alltogether.

Here is a tip for the name salvaging for the web designer
Enforce the name like this on the front page
Music Archive n Directory Listing Oh! no the Y - bugger
Assuming that’s where it stems from

Sucky name, yes.* But, I've gotten great jobs through there, including a 2 year subcontract for a Warner Bros. picture that I'm STILL working on.Spe3D wrote:Mandy.Com sounds like something a spammer would think up – Where have I come across lighthouse before?
