Batch Normalising MP3's

i use an mp3 player/walkman, but some of the tunes are quite low in volume, so i need an app that can 'normalise' all my mp3's to a higher level.
I could do it individually, but would take waaaaaaaay too long, and i dont want the hassle of converting either
anyone know of an app that can do this?

dbpoweramp can do.
One thing you should however be aware of (and that's true for ALL these apps): They don't work "straight" on the MP3 file but do some internal mp3-wave-mp3 conversion while perfomning the actual normalisation while the file is in "wave mode" - as a result you'll have them double-encoded, which certainly doesn't make up for better quality.

I have that, and did look at it, i know it has a normalise box. So i was gonna untick all other boxes and leave the normalise one ticked, trhen select all and go, overwriting original filesSascha Franck wrote:dbpoweramp can do.

Well, in order not to overwrite the originals, just select another folder. I would do that in any case.

Get MP3Gain. It'll do the job.

Audition has a group waveform normalize that will set at the average RMS of all the files and has a limiting option, but try a few files first as using the limiter gave me some unpleasant results when I tried it last..
I had a thread here at least 8 months ago about doing this & the best suggestions I recieved were to normalize to the LOWEST RMS so you don't crank up the noise floor on the audio..

I suspect it isn't the quiet tracks that are the problem (these probably already peak at or near 0dBFS) but the loud ones, which will have been compressed too much.Kriminal wrote:i use an mp3 player/walkman, but some of the tunes are quite low in volume, so i need an app that can 'normalise' all my mp3's to a higher level.
I just had to devise a batch process for a client who installs mp3 players in hotels: he has approx 6000 mp3s in all styles from RnB to classical, which needed volume matching. The trick is to use an RMS normalise set to a low level, so that stupidly compressed tracks have their level dropped significantly, while "audiophile" recordings which still have some dynamic range will be largely untouched..
Audition's "Group Normalise" function works really well, but isn't much use when dealing with thousands of files as you need to open them all first.. I couldn't seem to include it in a sript unfortunately, and ended up going back to my trusty old Sonic Foundry Batch Converter.

Aye thats the bugger for the job - Doesn't need to re-encode the mp3s either, just fiddles with some techy crap in the file that tells it what volume to play at;Lunatique wrote:Get MP3Gain. It'll do the job.

Cheers, i'll try that. Is it auto, or do i have to set levels to -3.0 or something?donkey tugger wrote:Aye thats the bugger for the job - Doesn't need to re-encode the mp3s either, just fiddles with some techy crap in the file that tells it what volume to play at;Lunatique wrote:Get MP3Gain.
