too bad keith is smoking tons and tons of rock. he's a lyrical genius but you can tell he's a bit strung out from his recent stuff. ultramagnetic mc's is my shit too, waaaay ahead of their time with the beats and lyrics. a little known fact but keith is a pretty good bass player, he has some sick filtered bass riffs on the sex style album and even played way back on some of the ultramagnetic stuff. eh well i think i'm gonna put on my white label 12" of kool keith "drugs" and wish i had a buzz..

Kool Keith is definitely a unique artist. I always liked what he was doing, but I need more closure than his stream of consciousness provides...

Kool Keith is DEFINATELY a lyrical genius, out of all his releases the Dr. Octagon album is his best. A timeless classic with production from Automator and cuts and scratches by Q-Bert these artists were a dream team at the time when this came out and probably still are.

As for genius now I'd say look to Pre-Fuse 73, MF Doom for lyrics as well as production.

yeeeeaah! the dr octagon album is great, but then i like most of kk's stuff. i just recently (re-)listened to the black elvis/lost in space album a lot. banger!

the new prefuse album is very good too. so is "airborne audio" (some anti pop ex-members). in general i like experimental electronica hiphop stuff.

but what really blew me away while listening to was dj spooky w/ matthew shipp "optometry", released as part of the "blue series continuum", which represents (imho) the best fusion of hh and jazz at the mo.

Personally I like the Dr. Dooom album a wee bit more than the Dr. Octagon album but other than that, I haven't heard too much Kool Keith... "Sex Style" and "Lost in Space" ain't got nuthin' on the "Orthopedic Gynecologist"!

Dr.Dooom is pretty amazing - Kutmasta Kurt I love the production because its such raw hip hop while using hardly any samples (they seem to use the Death Wish soundtrack quite a bit though..) The Dr.Octogon one too is jaw-dropping. As you say the dream team rips it up. Sick in every possible way. (by the way for people who don't know Keith's stuff, you could say stuff like this about pretty much everything he's ever done).

I'll check that.. you should have a look at King Britt (theres a track he did with Ursula Rucker which is mental), and the Sa Ra stuff too (a bit more p-funk style, those guys).

You guys are trippin'. Kool Keith was and is a genius. Dr. Octagon is dope but "Dr Doom: First Come First Served" is better. His newest release "Diesel Truckers" is THE SHIT! On track 14 he breaks out metaphysical geometries that are waaay beyond your average listener.
Airborn Audio is the shit too. High Priest used to be my favorite rap artist, but his releases are too sporatic for that to stay the case. Beans is wack

k-os is what i like hip hop style lately, and buck 65 usually makes me happy.
But Dr. Oktagon is one of my all time favourites. The lyrics for me was just part of it. I think that it's the music itself, the production style, and the fact that he could actually spit it all out, not to speak of remembering it all; I think it's more than just stream of conciousness, which can be cool too, but there's a sort of razor sharp (if slightly maniacal) wit that runs throughout. Wicked stuff.

I have to confess I'm not really too familiar with KK either. I know the name Dr. Octagon, but have never heard it. I believe he did the vocals on Prodigy's "Diesel Power", but thats the only thing I've heard.
