The process starts out fine, kontakt asks me to locate the samples, and then procedes to go through the motions of loading them. The instrument eds up empty though, with only the name of the imported patch, and no samples, no modulation data, nothing.

You can not import HALion 2 format into KONTAKT 1.53 Only HALion 1 !! WHY? WHO Knows ! too much beer I guess! 
Maybe the new Kontakt 2 will import without errors but I wouldn't bet on it.
