Real or sampled drums? If samples, it's much better to do this in the sampler, or with midi. A cool trick is to make use of a blank wave in your drum player. For example, you might have a snare with a huge reverb. Assign the snare, and the blank wave to the same mute/choke group. Then - use a midi note to the blank wave, which will effectively choke the snare exactly where you want it. I think the timing of the release of gated effects is critical to the groove, so this gives you the control you need - which still works if you change the tempo. Of course a midi gate can do a similar effect too.

Good suggestion, greendoor - it's just that choke/mute groupings might cut off the sound in a too much abrupt manner - so probably setting up proper envelopes would still be the better choice.

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Yeah - that's a fairly '80's trick that isn't too subtle. I would like to see a midi gate with ADSR (or draw your own curves) that could be synced to host (optional). Imagine if you could design your own preset curves - e.g. for a kick drum - wait for 1 16th note, slowly ramp up for 3 x 16th notes, hold for a 1/4 note then fade to nothing by the end of the bar (for example). Then be able to apply that effect to your reverb tail, regardless of tempo.

RonC, maybe the free GreenGate will do it:

If you want side-chain gating (gating triggered by another audio track) I recommend Compadre Beatpuncher. Just use it in 'Shaper' mode with very high ratio (attack, release at your taste). Then simply adjust the threshold where the gate should set in.

Of course this can also be done with the free SlimSlowSlider Sidechain compressor or Sidechain Gate:

Maybe the floorfish is better with vocals, then, cause I think it's freaking perfect for the jobrpc9943 wrote:Hey any suggestions? (free simple gating program to eliminate any sounds under xdB)
