You can't load a preset from windows, you need to open it through the SS2 GUI.
Load an instance of SS2 in your host. Then open your preferences. It's a little box on the right hand side that says PREFS. A box will pop up. Go to Browse, and point it to the folder containing your Sonik Synth sounds folder. Then click ok.
Now a list of your available voices should be in your browser window.
Highlight the first part in the mixer side of the SS GUI. Now go to the browser side and double click on the sound you want to load in that part. Next, go to your host, and make sure you have a midi track set to channel 1 and pointed to Sonik Synth. Play your keyboard, and you should have sound. HTH

I had a similar problem with Logic 5.5. The instruments would not show in the SS2 GUI window and I could not load them in manualy as you noted.
However I got it working eventually. So try this if you are using Windows: In the Sonic Synth 2 Instruments folder C:\Program Files\Sonic Synth2\SS2Instruments - you should see all the yellow instrument folders listed, if they are not here you need to load them into this folder using your sound bank cd's.
However in this SS2Instruments Folder you should also see (besides the instruments) an SS2 Instrument cache file (I forget what it's exact name is) but it will be the only file that is not a yellow folder.
So you need to remove this cache file because this is causing the problem - Right Click, Delete. Now upon going back into Cubase (Logic for me) and opening the SS2 software VST again, it will recreate this cache file automatically while it opens when it detects it's no longer there (it may take a longer time to open because of this). When it recreates this cache file - it will detect all the yellow instrument folders again and should list them in the SS2 GUI for you. *Problem Solved* I have done this twice and it worked for me with no probs, I see no reason why it would be any different for Cubase.
Though if you are using a Mac you should probably ignore this because I am not savvy with Macs (I work for HP as a Technician).
Hope this helps...
