I just got a new computer (dual Xeon) to use as my main DAW with Cubase SX. I used the dongle that was working fine with my older system but Cubase freezes during start up in my new configuration.

Do I need to re-authorize/re-configure the dongle prior to using SX? How do you do it/ I tried firing up the Syncrosoft application but it doesn't help me a bit...
The manual is so poorly writen that I couldn't find anything relating to this issue.

Thanks for your input!

You could try installing the latest Syncrosoft drivers.

Thanks, I did that but Cubase gets stuck while loading anyway.

I'd like to know if one is supposed to just plug the dongle as is when using a new system with SX on it...

or is there something that needs to be done to get it going?

Your license should be fine, no relicensing required. You probably need to rename your vstplugins directory. Then reload your plugs one at a time.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

No re-authorization or re-configuration is required. The licence to use Cubase is stored on the dongle.

This might not be a dongle problem. The following can help figure it out.

1. Start the Syncrosoft Licence Control Center (LCC). If LCC cannot be found, this is an installation problem. Re-install LLC (visit www.syncrosoft.com to get the latest version).

2. Do you see anything under My Protection Devices? If you don't, the Dongle is not initilised. It could be plugged into a bad USB port, or it might be burnt out if there is a problem with the new machine. Check for a light on the Dongle, if there is a light, this could be a software issue. Disconnect the Dongle, reboot the machine, install the latest Syncrosoft LCC, reboot the machine, connect the Dongle.

3. Can you find a license for Cubase? If there is no license, this is the problem.

4. Check the version (click on the ?). It should be 4.9.3.6 or better(the most recent version is 4.9.4.0).

5. Start Cubase. Watch carefully! Does it get past Initializing Protection? This is one of the first thing that Cubase does at start up. If it gets past this, there is probably something else wrong. How was Cubase "transferred" to the new machine? Was it installed, or was it copied from a backup? If it was copied from a backup, there's probably lots of registry information missing. Try installing from the Original CD media.

I hope that this helps.

when exactly does it freeze up? has it reached scanning plugins?

Post

KHC, thanks for the good advice. It appears my dongle is ok since I can plug it back into my old system and everything works fine.

At this point, I suspect my new system to be defective. I got lots of error messages such as this one:
SzAppName: svchost.exe SzAppVer: 0.0.0.0.
SzMod Name: unknow SzModVer: 0.0.0.0. offset: 00000000

When starting, the Asus page that comes up first has a line of words that is distorted and crushed (the line that usually tells you to hit F8, Del for Bios ...etc)

I guess I am sending the computer back to the company...

CC4: no, it freezes after the plugins are scanned, after VST connections appears but I think this problem is not related to Cubase (see above)
I did load SX from disk, first SX1 then SX2 and I also tried SX3 to see if it would make a difference.

Thanks for your help guys!
