what's the effect called that makes a track sound like a low bitrate MP3? you hear it a lot on Radiohead's album Kid A, for example the left channel guitar on the song Optimistic, and the crash cymbal on National Anthem, as well as I think probably on some of the synths. you can also hear this effect on Beck's new album, Guero, it's all over the song Broken Drum, on the acoustic guitar and the harmony voice.

such a pleasant sound!

ok, now name me a free plugin :-)

and if this is not a bit crusher, what does a bit crusher do? and what's a good free one?

by the way, everybody should check out cyanide II, it is so great, and free. it's pretty killer on sampled drums, and does the telephone voice thing perfectly. if you just want a plain high or low pass filter, though, I'd recommend ParisEQ, or what's built into your recording software, as cyanide has sort of a midrange/treble bump, which works on some things and not others

The effect "LOFI" is great. The MDA bundle has a better one though (IMO).

"Degrade" I think. It's perfect for getting an Atari/SID low-bit sound.
