I was thinking of doing a cool TR-808 kit for NI's Battery and I had a couple of ideas...

The first idea is already implemented. Let's take for an example the 808 kick, I know you can have samples of it at different attack/decay knob settings but it's no fun selecting them. Having to browse and preview for the right sounding file before using is not fun or intuitive and it's time wasting. It would be a lot nicer to be able to use an external controller knobs and "tweak" the decay and attack of your 808 kick while the pattern is playing just like in ReBirth. Well, I found a way in Battery of doing the same thing using CCs and multisamples. On my kit, I have all the different kick variations in their own cells and by having two knobs (attack/decay) sending CCs you can select the correct sounding sample. It works flawlessly. The only limitation of my samples is that they have only 5 knob position values (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10) but I think that the "in between" positions don't give you enough worthwhile variations and Battery doesn't give you enough cells for more combinations anyway...

My other idea is to have a nice realistic sounding TR-808 kit. The cool thing of analogue synthesizers is that they're umprecise. So I realize that just single shot samples won't cut it. The snare, for example, never sounds the same twice on the real thing. So the idea is to have a few samples each instrument for the same trigger key but layer them at different velocity ranges. You can then set you sequencer to play your drum pattern with random velocity values and voila! Analogue sounding 808! Now, this idea I haven't done yet because my samples are only one shot and I don't have an 808 to sample. This is where you, with an 808, come in to volunteer with the samples. I can give you exact directions of the knob settings for the 808 and how the samples need to be. So who wants to help me finish this awsome TR-808 Battery kit?!? :D

there is a sample set on hyperreal that does just what yer axin for...

He, he, yep, I used this set for idea #1 of my project. The problem is that it only has one sample of each attack/decay sound. I would like to get multisamples of each sound to implement my idea #2. Also, 48 khz samples would be even nicer... :)

Ah, the only catch for idea #1 implementation is that your project doesn't save your selected sample information so when loading the project the attack/decay knobs for the kick and snare are always full counter clock at 0. You have to save/send the all knob position (CCs values) in the beggining of the song....

what I don't get is: why do you guys like to load samples of a drum synth? why not use a drum synth vsti? there are even very good free ones like Ersdrums or Drumatic. If you want a changing sound character: apply a filter.
and if you like to go the sampling way: some samplers have filters which change dynamically (ie eg by vel). check vsampler for this. so you can use whatever 808 kit out there (and there are hundrets).

forgot: of course these free vsti can be midi controlled like in rebirth.
