i supose the best synth-type is fm, isn´t it?!
i´d like to see the special specifications for re-programming it :)

Darn it, I know how to make R2-D2 sounds (some of them) and blaster zoops, but not TIE fighters or light sabres.

How about some free soundfonts? I know they contain lightsaber and tie fighters samples...

Star wars weapons, ships, and sounds 8)

Also, further down, there is a cool Star Trek soundfont..

Play it by ear

In the old days it would have been a reversed elephant trumpet sample as the basis for the tie fighter. don't know if they've changed that in the recent ones.

I really don't want to try reversing an elephant. My stripes don't intimidate those big fellas one bit.

The interesting thing about a lot of the Star Wars sound effects is that they're organic in nature. I think R2-D2's beeps were done on either an ARP 2500 or 2600 but most of the rest of the sounds were "sampled" out in the wild and manipulated in the studio. I.e. the lightsabers being microphones waved in front of televisions; the laser blasts being utility pole guidewires hit with a metal object; Chewbacca's roar being a combination of a dog and a bear; etc.

I downloaded that lightsaber soundfont and play with it every once in a while. It's a lot of fun to randomly hit keys on the keyboard and have a lightsaber fight in my imagination.

That's just about the most honest thing I've ever read. :)

I sing Barry Manilow tunes sometimes when I'm walking the dogs.

I heard that chewbacca was a bear's roar being FM'ed by a lion's roar. Do you know of any good articles on the net about it?

I found this page on Ben Burtt's work on Star Wars:

http://www.filmsound.org/starwars/
Wookie sounds are constructed out of pieces of walruses and other animal sounds.

"You have bits and fragments of animal sounds which you have collected and put into lists: here is an affectionate sound and, here is a angry sound and, just like with R2-D2, they are clipped together and blended. With a Wookie, you might end up with five or six tracks, sometimes, to get the flow of the sentence" (Ben Burtt in Film Sound Today)
Lots of other interesting info in there as well. It makes me want to get a decent microphone and portable recorder so I can go out in the world and record sounds.

There are a few sources here in central Texas that I desperately want to sample. One is a railroad bridge over the Colorado River in Austin. One night at around 3 AM I was sitting on a footbridge just across from the railroad bridge as a train was crossing it. I heard the coolest sounds I've heard in a long time. The train is forced to slow down as it rounds a curve just after crossing to the north side of the bridge. The sound was a combination of a lack of car traffic at that time of night, the train brakes squealing as it rounded the curve, the normal train sound going over the bridge, the usual rythmic train noise going over tracks, the crisp and cool night air aiding in noise propagation, and the reverberation off the buildings and water. It sounded like dreams from the afterlife breaking through into our world. I almost wanted to weep  because I had no way to record and I was afraid I would never hear it again. Luckily I went back a week or so later and heard a similar sound so it's something that will occur repeatedly. :D

Another sound I want to record is near where I live. There is an old resort with an abandoned observation tower. I was walking by it one windy fall day and heard a very eerie moaning sound. The wind was blowing around the tower, through it's structure on the top, and through various cable that ran up the side of it. The cables were also swaying and banging up against the tower. It was very cool. Again, repeatable.

i live next to the tracks, being poor an all. that train can make some awesome sounds. i'll try to sample it

 so nobody has a self-programmed patch?

but thanks for the links :!: :!:

although i´d like to have a synth-patch for it, so that i can analyse how it was programmed, if possible. :)

how about a little contest? :D

greetings
