VST most like Serge or Buchla?

I have fond memories of a Serge modular I used as an undergrad, and a Buchla 400 as a grad student. Any suggestions on VSTs most similar in spirit to these hardware synths? My votes would be:
Snip (Nice free semi-modular "experimental sound generator" with a 70s Serge/Buchla vibe)

Swamp (The only synth I know besides the Buchla 400 that uses "Timbre Modulation")

My friend has a decent sized Serge system. I've never seen a softsynth which comes even remotely close to it in "spirit" or in similarity of modules.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Aalto is probably the closest.

Aalto may cover some of the Buchla/Osc FM/sequencing territory but since you can't really use the oscs as freely assignable modulators, it falls short, IMO.
One of the coolest things you can do with Serge synths is using a trigger to "ping" a filter for these wonderfully natural percussion sounds. You can then use the USGs to modulate the filter cutoff for some amazing FM tones. This is possible with synths like Bazille and Vaz but not in Aalto.
IMO, of course.

Hey everyone, Aalto 2 is in the works!! So make sure to tell Randy about what you'd like.
Also, check out the One Synth Challenge songs using Aalto: https://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc/osc-51-aalto
Some crazy stuff - only using Aalto.

If you would considering Rewiring then Reason stock without REs (or with a few cheap CV Rack Extensions) would be en par with the modularity.
THOR alone has a mod matrix where only sky is the limit. Oscillator as extra LFOs, LFOs can be used as OSCs, CV everything to everything etc. But to be honest THORs sound is way to clean and predictable without any manual modifications (though THOR can sound pretty dirty and powerful if progammed correctly).
Buchla style would be stuff like HYDi (though the generators can't be used as lfos either). If you love quirks and free running stuff and a shitload of different unusual fx that can be modulated as well like the rest of this synthesizer with it's own sound then you should try out this semi modular thingy. Release of the polished and finished version will be in near future. The old V1.2 can be found in the KVRDC12 section. But I recommend to wait for the new version.
And what about the KX77FREE VST Plug-ins? The whole poly mods are pretty cool too.
Regards
Sebastian

Aalto is very close to the sound of a Serge or Buchla, also Xils 3, Bazille, Zebra2...
Also Aalto 2 is comming
In my website there are some sounds with Aalto.
Cheers!
With Aalto you can do that, you can send a trigger with the sequencer to the filterjustin3am wrote: One of the coolest things you can do with Serge synths is using a trigger to "ping" a filter for these wonderfully natural percussion sounds.

Yeah, I was just thinking that. Aalto is so good IMO. I love the interface and the sound quality is fantastic. I'm also a big Vaz Modular guy, though I resisted it for years because of the price, but now it's in the same range as Zebra. Sounds fantastic. So "hardware" and dare I say... analog? It's also the only synth plug in I know where you can load another vst as a module. Why it isn't spoken of more... I don't know. I think it's "Windows 3.1" UI look is holding it back, but it's pretty easy to use once you learn it.ZenSound wrote:Aalto is very close to the sound of a Serge or Buchla, also Xils 3, Bazille, Zebra2...
