Hi,

I have a couple of questions about Rewire. Firstly, is it possible to route audio out of Reason, into an effect plugin supporting Rewire, and then back into Reason? If not, what is the easiest way to use VST effects and VSTi instruments in conjuction with Reason?

Thanks very much for any help. Apologies for my ignorance,
Ben

need to rewire it to a host, can't route out & back in.
A guy (hammer something) has hacked the rebirth input machine to allow audio into reason.
Unfortunately reason can't be used as a rewire slave when this is used, so it's only applicable in a live situation really

just say no to rewire!

That's easy to do if you use Sony Vegas as your multitracker, they say no for you, then to further put salt in the wounds they put rewire host/slave capabilities into Acid, and don't give you any multitrack recording features.

To answer the original question. I don't know all of Reason's capabilities because I'm not a Reason user....I just have never been able to adapt to it's GUI. Anyways Basically with rewire you need one app that supports Rewire "host" capabilities, and another with Rewire "Slave" capabilities. Now when you configure both apps you can route audio from the slave directly into a bus that appears in the HOST. So you can add VST FX's to the audio in the host software as long as the host supports VST FX's.

For example, I'm most familiar with Sony's Acid, so I'll give you the run down from there with Reason. So you would in Acid tell Acid to add a Rewire instrument. If Reason is rewire slave capable then Reason would show up as an instrument selection in Acid. Now a bus appears in Acid, that can then be routed to Acid's master bus. So it basically works like Reason's master bus now appears in Acid, and whatever audio from reason's master bus gets mixed with any of the tracks in Acid. You can also create more buses in Reason and have the capability to add additional buses in Acid, where you can route a single track from reason into a single bus in Acid and therefore have complete control of applying VST FX's to that track in Acid. You could also add VSTi's in Acid and therefore combine the performance you arranged in Reason, with a performance you arrange in Acid.

Basically you can do this with Reason and any program that supports both VST's and VSTi's as well as having rewire "host" capabilities. Sonar,Acid and Cubase are some good options. In my opinion rewire is one of the greatest technologies available. It basically let's you overcome many of the short comings of one program, by ,combining it with another program to give you the best of both worlds. And it's all done in sample accurate sync between the 2 apps, where you hit play in the Host and the Slave immediately plays at the same time in sync.
Still in search of sonic nirvana....

As others have said, to use VSTs with Reason, you need to use another app that supports Reason. You route the output from Reason to a track in your multitracker using Rewire and you can add all the VST effects you want to it.

When rewiring Reason, most people skip using a mixer in Reason and instead rewire the individual instruments to tracks in their favorite sequencer. I use Tracktion as my sequencer. For each Reason instrument I'm using I will have a separate track setup in Tracktion with the track set to use Rewire for audio. I then configure the rewire left and right inputs in Tracktion to match the master bus inputs I routed the instrument to in Tracktion. Now any midi notes I play from the Tracktion sequencer for that track will be played through that particular Reason instrument (you can also record in the Reason sequencer and it will play back through your regular sequencer).

Play around with rewire for a bit and I think you will get the hang of it fairly quickly.

like any great ideas people get tired, becuase they constantly need stimulation , but rewire, was a brilliant idea, along with vst, it opened up computers to music in an incredible way
