A Quick Start Guide for Blue Cat's Digital Peak Meter and Digital Peak Meter Pro in Cakewalk Project 5 has been written by mn. Another post also explains automation recording in Tracktion, and it's here.

Digital Peak meter is a Peak Meter that allows you to record automation envelopes that correspond to the signal peak envelope. It's totally free and works for Windows VST and DirectX hosts.
Digital Peak Meter Pro is only 10 EUR and allows you to have more control on the generated envelope parameters. Check it out on http://software.bluecatonline.org
