What's up kiddies. Ok, i've been at work with another of mm de jong's tracks...(coz they rock!) and i've now remastered 2. Here's both of them before and after:

First Track: Barbarian.

Before ToTc

After ToTc

Not bad egh?

Here's another

Second Track: Voyager

Before ToTc

After ToTc

So, leave your opinions/criticizms, etc....and remember, i'm not getting paid for this.

Post

You should get paid for this ;)

Am I still the first one to respond?

I had an extensive listen to all 4 songs, and my first conclusion is that I need better monitors :(...

My very honest feedback: I think that mmdejonge aka Michael already did a very good job at mixing, although Voyager is clearly my favorite, composition-wise and mix-wise.

On both my old home stereo and on my Sennheiser headset the mastered version really added something, and I wish I knew the right words. While the originals are good and enjoyable to listen, the mastered version really make it sound like the soundtrack of good movie. It's adds space, excitement, and the feeling of really being in the middle of it. (I could say that it's more defined low and sparkling high, but it's more than that, it's an overall feeling of polishedness and at the right moments wideness :) ).

('Thanks Hans' for short)

Hi again, Totc,

just found this  . Extremely nice, as I didn't know MMdeJonge's works :-). Am stone-tired if that word exists in your language  , so for now I just can say what beautiful songs...Hans has said very nice words about them...

cheers!

...not too tired to listen, though. I like both versions in a way, very nice symphonic-like pieces that aren't too bombastic in any way, always a little danger here maybe. But not here! Nice work! More sparkle, yes. Great, people! Go on with it and don't forget to drop little e-mails to those who are always late at the Café or Everything else  .
And really, Hans, nice words. I have no monitors at all :-))). But the lousy neighbour I could talk about for hours, cause he even hates the noise of a silent clavinova, so getting decent monitors would be senseless.

Nice work, and with headphones you get the feeling you're in a good film.

Thanks for listening and the kind words Georg, it's much appreciated :D

Thanks hans, and thanx to everybody else so far too. Umm, yes megazoid, i got your email..i'll be replying to it soon, just been really busy lately. Got waaaay to much on my plate. lol, i didn't expect this mastering thing to take off so quickly, so i've got alot to sort out. soon though, promise. ; )

Really though, i'd like more comments on these....especially from people like kriminal and cptgone who asked to hear my work.

peace!

Barbarian - watch your peaks if this is to be burned to CD, I think it only takes one to through the thing out, love the track wonderful track - not got my DAW on so cannot comment on quality between the two - just had a quick listen on headphones so far, I am sure if you need constructive advice though there should be some guys here that know about the differences.

I agree the mix is good in the first example to start with (seems like a differnet encoded mp3 too) might be good to do both at the same rate if possible.

Great music

Why are you doing mastering for free totc?

Best regards,

Peter

To get alot more experience than I have with different genres of music...Everything I've done in the studio is really heavy metal type stuff.

Phew! Heavy metal :) , great idea to do mastering for free to try your skills on different material :) .

I guess after this thread there will be a sudden influx of mastering requests – are you selecting the tracks by genera or by mp3 snippets that are sent to you? Does it take you a long time to master a track or is it really dependent on the quality of the presented wave after mix down – is there any tips you can give to people who would like to get a track mastered – ie some effects should be left off or not dithered etc? or can you work round most issues?

Looks like a cool idea ToTc – I think both you and the artists should get a lot from it – I guess if it all goes well you could entertain the idea of setting up mastering for your choices in genera or style at cost effective prices?

Best regards,

Peter
