Suggestions for a commercial artist to go it alone on net

Not me of course Friend of a friend, who for various reasons knows squat about the net and is looking into the possibility of doing a solo release (already in the can) himself.

What is being thought of of either;
1. A company that will host his material, do the technical bit of downloads to paying fans via some secure payment and not charge him an arm or a leg. Now as to units..I don't know..but it could be a lot.
2. The same but with the ability to also do CD burning from a studio master and distribute them directly to fans (this I was a bit more doubtful about).

Any recommendations?

hmm, I think they might need something a bit more on the money handling side rather than just setting up pay pal..for them the cost won't be so much a problem, more having the web logistics behind it.

Maybe checkout magnatune.com or cdbaby.com for starts.

Or hunt down some other artists who have gone the same route and see how they did it.

in terms of the net, i would tell the "commercial artist" to see and follow up on what some of the other "commercial artists" are doing on myspace. why they have chosen myspace however is beyond me. it reminds me of a kiddie "am i hot or not" website, but the likes of Billy Corgan, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Weezer, and crap have flocked there.
