Started using my group buy version in anger tonight.

It's a real interesting effect for obtaining a "mastered sound"

All the algorithm and process options make the ears work hard ... but early results are good 8)

In anger? Please explain... I bought it through the group-buy too... but haven't felt overly angry about it yet!

Shipping online to Amsterdam takes a lot longer than shipping to the UK ;)

Been using it some more - on an acoustic drum kit.

Getting more presence and more kick, which is good as acoustic kits sound great on their own, but tend to die in the mix.

V nice

Now I find I need less compression to get punch, which is good as comps still scare me to death after all these years.

Comps make sound louder, but so often I can end up killing off the dynamics and get a punchy-yet-flat result (I know, I know ... )

I'm still on the demo version at the moment (will get around to sorting out the purchase tomorrow am though :) ).

The more I use it the more I like it - I especially like the fact that each of the different algorithms have quite distinctive characteristics - which means you can get it to suit any track with a fair bit of fine-tuning.
So far I sem to stick with algorithm E and process E and F - gives good space and definition to drums without overly boosting the instrumentation, and still manages to add some sparkle.

You're right about using less compression - on a recent track, I ended up with an RMS of around -20 and it sounded better than other variations of comps and enhancers that I needed to get up to nearer -16 to get a comparative sound. It adds so much space, I find I don't need to squash very much at all.

I almost have a standard final mix setup now - Kjaerhus GUP-1 at low compression settings (1.2-1.5:1) -> Spectralive -> SX Multiband (at far lower settings than I used to use) -> Pocket Limiter. Don't need any Eq, and don't need to boost the high mids and highs on the multiband any more.

I haven't really played around with Spectralive for tracking purposes yet, but I can imagine it'll work well on some groups more for the mid control, and even tightening up the bass end. Some of the settings seem to do wonders in the lower mid range. I think I'll end up preferring Spectralive for warmth rather than many of the valve and sat type plugins...it can be warm and clear without adding all that harmonic crap. :D

I don't know how this thing works, but it is incredible. :o

Bloody incredible price too ... at NZ$23 it's a steal. This thing sounds like $500+ hardware. You could spend more than that on fancy s/w Eqs, comps, stereo enhancers etc and they still might not sound as polished.

My BBE 442 will now be packed away, I'm pretty sure. The BBE is good, but Spectralive is so much more versatile - I love it to death. Sparkle, space, yet it can make those drums slap yer face at the same time.

I just got in from work this a.m. ...paid Crysonic and got the download almost straight away - that's a nice surprise too. Now I'm going to have to stay up and play with the little bastard and make sweet noises while I should be sleeping... :? I feel a need to load up all my tracks from the past year and remaster them :( ... :? .... 8) ... ... :D ...

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

And it's shiney - I likes shiney toys :hihi:

wait okay hold on here when this was first released everyone put it down, its synthedit, etc. so what the hell is going on now? its suddenly a good product? Or is this some twisted promo thread?

I was skeptical about it as well due to it being synthedit based. Mostly because, with VERY few exceptions, i haven't heard many good dynamic's oriented plugins come out of synthedit. This is incredible though. I don't know how they did it...be it with custom modules, or the included ones....but however they did it, it's amazing. Great sound. Just give them your 30 dollars....it's money well spent. :D

I don't know, Ron ... I don't think they could have paid off both Kev and kritikon and still have enough left over for a summer vacation (or maybe it would be a winter vacation) -- edit: and I don't mean to suggest that either of them would accept payola

but it is good to read comments from people who I imagine have "ears" and discernment, and who didn't just join in May 2005 -- especially after the apparent shiftiness regarding the price drop and whether or not the plugin contained custom assembly routines

so it's doing something more than just scooping the mids?

not just snake oil à la certain audiophile accessories? -- e.g. "pyramidal rare-earth lattices using esoteric prime-number relationships will tune your household electrical system for maximal audio fidelity"

even if that's the case, it still seems like a pretty good $30 shortcut

Yes, it does much more than scoop the mids. actually...i don't think it scoops anything. It just kinda adds some kind of sonic characteristic to all the frequncies or something. lol. You've got to be a bit careful programming it...it can make things sound a little...uh...Sharp?...harsh?...but that's just if you turn everything up to high....which could happen with any plug...as long as you program it right, it really makes a unique difference.

hmm..hmm....hmm...

I'm also curious about "in anger" ...

Now would be a good time for Crysonic to comment... :D

I was wondering what EXACTLY it did too. But I a/b'ed with BBE and Spectralive won every time. So I stopped asking why and i just go with it.
