help- two inputs on one amplifier

hey all,
i am a fair newbie to music rigs n was just wandering if there was a way to have two instruments plugged into a 1 socket amp input?
My guitarist cant be asked to lug his amp over my house every other day so he rekons there may be a way i can do this and have (for example) the keys and vocals through a single amp without buyin another amp.

any ideas would be appreciated.

In cases like this, it is not advisable to use splitter adapters. There are impedance issues and such...

By far the easiest work-around is to use a small box with faders, also known as a "mixer". They can mix several incoming signals, so they can all be heard through one amp. With most models you can adjust levels, panning and EQ for each individual channel. Behringer is the king of unbelievably cheap, yet functional, hardware (including mixers)

I use a Behringer 802B Eurorack for this. There are even smaller versions. Small, lightwight, cheap, sturdy, low s/n ratio. Highly recommended for this purpose.

'Y' cable at Radio Shack - 2 MONO Female 1/4 inputs to 1 MONO Male 1/4 jack should do the trick. And make sure it's MONO and not stereo (by an extra visible band on the jack - should just be 1 for mono)

Like Cookie says - this ain't the best, but if you and your mate are just jamming right now - it'll do in a pinch.

That Y-thingy is useless for combining signals that are not, lets call it "compatible".

Suppose you put in a keyboard and a guitar. Since the keyboard is way louder, that is everything you will hear. Mixing guitar & microphone also does not work, because now the guitar is the loudest of both.
