...any thoughts?
I was thinking about entering a few this year, the deadline for the UK one is the end of june. Anyone hda any successes with these? Are they worthwhile at all?

Things like the UK Songwriting Contest, the US songwriting contest, the international songwriting contest, the john lennon one, there's about a dozen.
Same format on each; it costs £15 per entry, and there's usually one overall winner who gets a bunch of stuff possibly including label interest, plus category winers who get less.
Any thought?

Well.... After sending out cassettes to every Tom, Dick, and Harry contest in the 90's, none of which to no avail.
My last ditch effort was to Music West '95 in Vancouver... and I won!
They flew me out, put me up in a motel, had a big shin dig at the convention center, got to meet lots of industry people and greats... But when I came home it dawned on me I was just another pawn for a tax write off booze bash to increase inflating budgets for inept and arrogant industry imbeciles whose hand shakes was better than their hand jobs - and they knew they could never be a better whore than that, ever!
I mean I didn't expect to win....
But when I did, I didn't expect to loose!
Contests - go figure!

If you don't mind being ripped off these contests are fun. It is kinda like a lottery. You pay - what $10? - and get the chance to win - what $10,000?
Only problem is that there are 100,000 others also paying. Usually the rules say that the organisers can cancel the contest if not enough people participate, meaning if they don't get enough money. They do not care who wins or anything. For them it is a business deal. Some of these things are pretty big (popstarts, John Lennon contest etc) and sometimes there might even be something in it for you - but don;t expect much more than the ride and some fun if you get through to the next round.
