I was thinking of getting Crunchessor. It seems simple to use so maybe I can get a handle on it. I also saw the Buzz Bundle could be available soon so I might wait and check that out as well. I know Voxformer is for vocals but would it be useful as a general tracking compressor/swiss army knife for guitars, bass, drumms or is that just crazy talk.

Like I said I know nothing about compressors except that I should be using one somewhere/sometimes. I was just thinking if voxformer has a compressor it might perform a few functions for the money I spend. I guess this whole line of questioning is motivated by the desire to not spend too much money but still get a reasonable quality compressor. These plugins (not sure about buzz) are around the right price.

You might take a look at Kjaerhus GUP as well, and you could try playing a bit with Kjaerhus Classic Compressor.
AFAIK Crunchessor is supposed to do more coloring of the sound than GUP. I don't have Voxformer, but the advantage of that (and Kjaerhus GAC is comparable) that you have a set of related functions in a single plugin.
Regardless of you what you buy you'll have to do some exploring and experimenting to use it properly, so you might as well do the experimenting before you buy ;).

For the record, nobody knows anything about compressors. There's a few people that pretend to know, and will try and blind you wth science, but, basically, compression is the biggest white elephant the recording industry has ever known.

All bollocks basically

Fantastic ancoats!

You might want to try Blockfish, the presets are very good, just need a little tweaking now and again.

That's funny - I know nothing about white elephants.

Are they from Antarctica? Given the description - all bollocks - I can only imagine that they evolved enormous testes to insulate themselves from the icy environment. Maybe the rest of the white elephant's body became compressed due to the tremendous weight of the hypertrophied bollocks bearing down on its chest - after the poor bugger slipped over on the ice, or something?

Thanks everyone. Crunchessor is so far the only one that is within budget. Kjaerhus Gold and Elemental Audio are out of the scope unfortunately. I am pretty sure that crunchessor has several colouring modes which can also be bypassed. I'll have a look at blockfish as well. Didn't know about the presets so maybe they will help me get started.

We're practically neighbours: want some lessons in dynamics processing? £20 per hour (to you) ;)

Er, no. I'll pass thanks. For £20 an hour I'd expect more than lessons in dynamic proccessing

It just splits the dynamic range into different regions, with seperate processing for each. I've made something similar in Synthedit, though I couldn't get the graphics as flashy.. ;)

Compression is very simple to explain. Look at your finger, take a hammer and smash that finger. Observe the result : a compressed finger ! That´s what´s it all about... .. .
Endorphin and George Yohng´s W1 Limiter are my favourites (personally, I never use a hammer for compression). ;-)
