Lesson one: twist the knob labeled "Bass" hence and forth until you get the general idea what it does.
Lesson two: twist the knob labeled "Treble" hence and forth until you get the general idea what it does.
Now it gets more complex: parametric sweepable middle freqs! Twist the knobs until you get the idea what they do.
Some hints: "Freq" controls the center frequency of an area in the spectrum to make softer or louder. "Q" controls the width of the bump.
In general it's better to cut away offending frequencies on tracks, but boosting essential areas might work well on some material. Experimenting is the best way to learn it.

another hint: if some part of your track doesn't stand out so much as you want try to Eq this part instead of just increasing the part's overall volume, you'll gain a better definitiion of your sound and the mix will not get muddy.

to learn to eq well, I recommend downloading Inspector (free!); http://www.elementalaudio.com/products/inspector/
put it on a couple of channels, and you can see which frequencies occupy the same portion of the spectrum, as well as seeing where you could boost the sound. This graphic representation is very helpful.
The FL paragrphic eq is decent, and with inspector, you can see how the Q parameter scoops (or boosts) a broad or narrow chunk of the sound out.
