Hi there, im after that synthy 'pulsing' effect, i guess similar to a gate, but with more options to get a stronger groove going from a plain input signal.

Could you describe this pulsing effect of which you speak and the more options you mean? It might be as simple as modulating a sound with an LFO or just a sequenced sound with an overlapping decay between notes, or maybe something more complicated.
Please elaborate.

I'm not sure if you mean a synth or an effect...
See the link on the upper left, two down from the KVR logo? You can search the entire plug-in database based on the type of effect (including Gate), host, OS, etc. Give it a try, great feature - that's what brought me to this forum.

I think it's rhythmic gating you are describing.
try my scuzzphut6 or 6.5-lite plugins. Feed a steady pad through them and they will chop it into a rhythmic groove.
if that's the effect you're looking for, but you don't like the plugins - do a search for trancegate and you'll find some others

ive been using the built in chopper vst in cubase and really like the idea of the sound almost 'pulsing' in and out of the mix, but i havnt seen any good/advanced choppers around. an advanced lfo plugin might have a similar effect, im going for a more 'rave' sound. bascially, the more options to 'chop' the better!

So it's a step-sequenced gate you're after. My favourite is Tiny God's Tiny Gate. It allows you to randomize the sequence, and control the degree of randomization, and has an envelope to alter the depth of the gating.
I think the most advanced one around is SONICBYTES Gat'R.
And take a look at Devine Machine's minion, all four targets can be set to volume, so it could be made into a great complex gate (is there anything that minion can't do?) Do a forum search here for funkadil minion, there was a special version Steve threw together that had a sample snipper setting that can be a lot of fun on gate-styled effects.

Not free, but an excellent multi-effect.

OK, ignore the database...but for what it's worth, my faves are:
Oli's Chopper
DFX MIDI Gater
And I think you'll like this one: mgTriggerGate
