Automation of VST effects

Hi all!
I'm currently using Cubase SX 2.x (though read on Sonar users!) and what I'm trying to do is automate a VST effect parameter. Now I can do this with the good old Read/Write buttons, but what I'd like to do is map a MIDI controller to the parameter. Is this possible? The plug-in I'm trying to automate doesn't matter, I'm just interested in the principle.
Also, I'd like the automation to be tied to the part. I think I have to use the Range tool and do this manually at the moment. I have something like "automation follows part" checked, but moving the part doesn't move the automation data. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Would an upgrade to SX3 make things easier?
I've been thinking about Sonar recently - does this handle automation data a bit more part-centrically? Can it do MIDI CC to VST parameter mapping?
Thanks

You can set up an generic remote device. I don't know the specifics, but check the manual for further info.

I'll take a look - thanks!
I have a Mackie Control hooked up - could this help? I haven't used it in anger yet, and thought it could only control native things on channel strips. If it can reach inside VST effects I'll be a very happy girl!

If it sends Midi CC's you can use it to control anything, apart from that, I know way too little about the Mackie Control. I have a BCR-2000 myself which I think is great, but the Mackie Control is a bit more specific afaik.
edit: I forgot. Welcome to KVR!

I also have a Kenton Control Freak - it's this I'd want to assign to an effect (so I can control multiple things simultaneously). I use it all the time to control VSTis, but I've never worked out how to get at VST effects (hence the question). I'll look into generic remote devices, it's one of the places I never thought to look.

You might want to use the "GRD" for controlling VSTi's that doesn't have internal CC support as well. So it might be worth it indeed.
