I need a very basic sampler. I want to throw a bunch of drum hits at it and then start programing beats without having to fiddle with mapping for an hour.
Any tips?

How do you expect the sampler to know which is which?

The least you'd have to do is add the kick drum to C0, the snare to E0, etc. AFAIK the built-in samplers of eXT and Tracktion work very well for that (and more too). Currently I'm using VSampler, it's not completely intuitive (it takes 1-2 hours to understand its approach), but after that you just drag the kickdrum.wav to the C0 note on the keyboard (picture) and you're ready to play. In addition you can save it as a soundfont once your ready. Also nice to map several samples to a single note, either as velocity layering, or to just play random samples of the group everytime the note is played (for more realism).

No, the sampler doesn't need to know which is which and I don't care whether the kick is on C0 or F4, I just find out where it is and start from there.
Back in the good old Akai S2000 days I would just throw all my samples in one big wav, slice it up with Recycle and throw the Recycle file at the S2000. This worked really well, however these days I figured there would be more sofisticated ways to go about this.

I used to use Cut Rate Keymapper for this kind of thing. It only works with Akai .akp files, but if your sampler of choice an read Akai .akp's then you should be ok. If not, the source code is available, so maybe some bright spark can adapt it :)

OK so if I find a sampler that reads AKAI's akp files then I'm ok.

Well, I guess so ;)

OK can't install and the VB5 runtime zip file from the page is corrupt, what now?

I never needed the VB5 files. What version of Windows are you running and when you say you can't install CRK, what is exactly happening ?

Get the VB5 files Here.

an alternative solution:

1) download shortcircuit free
2) drag & drop or load the samples into it.
3) pay me money if you want to play more than two notes at the same time.

I'm obviously a bit biased though.

short circuit free completely trashes T2
I would like to buy it though

Vsampler 3 is the answer. It's not really a "simple sampler", but it will do what you want. I know exactly what you're saying too. You have a folder with drum samples and you want to go in, grab them all at once, import them all at once, and have them instantly mapped to keys. Vsampler does this and also, NI Battery will do this. Those are the two that I've used but there may be other sampler that can do this.
