For me, the major innovation in SX3 is the Audio Quantize stuff. Incredibly useful for remixes. Apart from that, I'm still getting used to the newer features (which are quite amazing), especially as I have to use both SX 2 and Nuendo 3. If you have the money, I'd say go for it, because the new features only augment the old ones, and are largely only there when you need them. It's not as uncomfortable a leap as SX 1 to SX 2 (in fact, you can open SX 3 projects in SX 2 mostly intact).

Yes - but I have to be clear, they're not 100% compatible. I can open Voice Over projects fully intact with a few insert effects, but complicated music projects won't open with all the inserts/fx; you'd probably have to bounce down some stuff.Jonny X wrote:That was a major concern for me, I work with others, and if they dont all have SX3 how would we share files... Good job it works, makes upgrade safer.bduffy wrote:you can open SX 3 projects in SX 2 mostly intact

like i say, it works now in sx3, bouncing VSTis in seconds rather than minutes (unless you have a very heavy VST with high polyphony - expect a minute or two for very heavy load plugins.)
if you have a uad-1, then you have to disable plugs temporarily via the control panel for faster freezes.
how could it be near instant?

It is now! It just freezes the parts of the track that use a VSTi.. Plus you can unload the VSTi once frozen, invaluable when dealing with large sample sets... As much as some may sneer, SX3 freeze kicks arseJonny X wrote:How do you define properly?csl wrote:plus freeze works properly this time.
In SX2 I tried it, it took 20mins to freeze a tassman part that could be bounced in 1min 40secs... Whats the point in that...
Freeze should (and certainly could be) near instant

i've been using cubase sx (must be version 1) for about a year now, having got it from a relative who used to use it. i have been thinking about getting version 3, but am unsure whether i will be able to open my version 1 projects in version 3.
i have seen comments about opening a version 3 project in version 2, but i have also seen comments that versions 1 and 2 are quite different, so i am left uncertain.
does anyone know if i will be able to open and work on my version 1 projects in version 3? or does anyone have both versions in order to test it out for me before i shell out for the new version?
hope someone can help.
cheers!

I've had no problem opening V1 projects with V2, so I forsee no problems in opening V1 projects with V3 either... Bugs notwithstanding

cool - thanks for the quick reply griels!
it seemed likely to me that it shouldn't be a problem - usually new versions of programs can handle files from older versions (i'm thinking of progs like Word, Photoshop etc...) but the complexity of Cubase's projects made me uncertain.
however, if versions 2 and 3 projects are largely cross-compatible, and you have had no problems opening version 1 projects in version 2, it sounds like there's a good chance it'll work ok.
(caveat: although as you said - notwithstanding bugs!)
will check back once i've tried it out, and post an update of my successfulness. (or should that just be "success"?!
)
cheers all!

The only problem I've ever had with v1 to v2/v3 is that the FX Channels might interpret the FX sends from v1 projects a little bit differently sometimes, but usually there are no problems at all. It took me a little while to get used to SX2 from SX1, but you'll love it, believe me.pellgarlic wrote:i've been using cubase sx (must be version 1) for about a year now, having got it from a relative who used to use it. i have been thinking about getting version 3, but am unsure whether i will be able to open my version 1 projects in version 3.

excellent! (read in mr. burns' type voice)
i really like cubase 1, so if 3 is an improvement, i'm sure i'll be impressed!
bduffy - if the only problem you have come across involves sends, i should be ok, as i tend not to use sends very often - can't seem to get them to work very well... if i use the same effect on a few tracks, with the same settings, eventually i run out of processor power. but if i try setting the effect up as a send, then routing all the tracks through it, it always sounds different...
tangents aside, it sounds increasingly likely that i should be able to open my cubase 1 projects in version 3 no problem!!
cheers!
