Back on my old Fostex mixing desk, i loved to turn up the Gain and lower the fader to get that slight 'crunch', that overmodulated sound. ( on e.g. hats, bass or bassdrums.)
I've tried a bunch of overdrive plugs. The one that comes with SX2 and a bunch of free ones. Still i can't find the sound i had in my mixing desk. Maybe i should seek more analogue-ish i don't know..
I'm not looking for distortion, neither heavy overdriven hardcore sounds. I just want that slight layer of crunch and hiss that you'd get by turning up a channel's gain while lowering the fader to keep the volume at the same level.
Can anyone suggest a overdrive / overmodulate effect that can sound as i described above?
Looking for an Overmodulating effect. (overdrive)

You'll want something subtle then...
Voxengo AnalogFlux TabeBus springs to mind. Don't let the name fool you.
There's plenty of subtler distortion/saturation/overdrive style things. From what I've heard, people like those TbT plugins for such jobs.
Not necessarily for this kind of work, the goold old DigitalFishPhones plugins might do you something good, as would some of the author's other plugins. Dominion and THD especially, since they provide nice subtle saturation when used in moderation.
I'm still using my crusty old Spirit Folio for this overdriven channel sound
