Does Soundforge do *non-destructive* editing of MP3 files? Whenever I try a simple trim or crop (of say a 192kbps MP3), it does not save in the same format... it either saves in 256k mp3 or PCM.

Anyone knows something I don't?

Afaik Sf decodes the mp3 to wav and then after the editing you re-encode it again, not lossless.

Best thing do to is using a mp3 cutting utility if you only need minor cropping etc.

If you simply save the file SoundForge will edit it any way you want. Now if you have the lesser version it comes without the mp3 codec. But all files types that are supported will load and you can edit. SF-8 has non destructive editing. I've only used the full version from the start so that's been my experiance, But I have run across the you must buy the plugin codec in Vegas.

well mp3 depends on perceptual encoding, and most perceptual models have temporal factors affecting the storage- meaning that if you change the order of the sounds then the compression needs to be recalculated to know which bits can be 'left out'; cutting a chunk out would mean that things have changed and it would have to be recompressed. it's also not possible to do editing on an actual mp3 - editing is on a sample by sample basis, and mp3 does not store information in that way - it has to be decompressed to memory into a standard PCM format in order to do any editing, and thus needs to be recompressed back into mp3; this is something that will happen behind the scenes whether you're aware of it or not.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Try "save as" and pick your quality of mp3.

SF8 will save all mp3s. THe cheaper versions do not.
