How About Those Patch Fixes For The Mac? (404)

Apologies if I've missed the somewhere. I know the PC folks got their patch fixes almost immediately, and last night I'm trying to use CmStrings and still can't go below C3 or so due to the patch looping problem.

Will we ever see these fixes on our platform?

The patches were available for download from the CM website for ages - if they've gone now, have a word with Kevin Redding. Don't forget also, we (Muon) didn't create the patches, CM did and there's not a lot we can do further.

So where is the ftp/url for the Mac DS404 patches? I have never been able to find it on the CM site...

You can check with kevin.redding@futurenet.co.uk - if the patches are no longer posted I'm positive he'll be able to sort something out for you Mac guys.

Red - are the modified original CM patches still on there somewhere for download too?

So will that PC patcher work on the MAC now? I thought it didn't, hence my post.

Or do I have to download all of those invidual patches? Crap, that's a lot of DL time...

Any chance these will all appear on a future CM cover disc? I'll just mothball my 404 until then, or scrap it all together. Between this and the number of times it randomly crashes on me, I think it's just not worth it.

No, the self-executing patch can't be used on a Mac. If there was a suitable piece of software out there for the Mac just like WinPatch that can create self-executing updaters then there wouldn't be this problem at all, but we've been unable to locate anything out there that does the same job.

DS404 works just fine *without* the CM patches, there are other patches available (see above) and you can, of course, make your own

If it crashes for you why don't you check the known issues and see if its anything we already know about. Also make sure that you've got enough RAM allocated to your sequencer. Nearly every single Mac crash reported to us, with the exception of the issues listed, has been traced to users simply not bothering to increase their RAM allocation and expecting the plugin somehow to be able to load a 50mb patch!

Well, then like I said, I hope those patches appear on an upcoming CM CD. I don't know anything about programming, so forgive my ignorance...I don't understand why the PC side can be updated but not the Mac side. Mac programs are updated all the time.

And I have no doubt that the random crashing has to do with memory. I've jacked and jacked and jacked it up, but it's the RANDOM-ness of the crashing that irks me. "Usually" if there's not enough memory it will crash when I try to load a large sample. (A "file size" feature, such as can be found in Reason's Refill browser, would be invaluable in the open dialog box.) For a while, I felt "safe" if I could get past the patch loading step...things would hum along fine. I actually found the CM String patch to fit into a mix and I tracked a performance with it. Go to hit "save" as soon as I was done recording and BAM, crashed and gone...the whole take, the whole patch parameter tweaking I had done...everything. That the instability I'm talking about.

Even if I know why it's crashing, if I have no idea WHEN it's going to crash, it's not very reliable, is it?

If there was a suitable piece of software available for the Mac that we could use to make a self-extracting updater for the broken CM patches, we'd do CM a favour and make an updater for the Mac patches same as we did for the PC. On the PC, we used WinPatch for this purpose and it worked very well. Now, if you or anyone else hears of a Mac equivalent of WinPatch that works then drop me a mail.

As for your crashes, they don't sound random at all to me. DS404 needs to allocate extra temporary memory whilst loading a patch, and again during saving. These temporary buffers are equivalent to the size of the patch being loaded (in the first instance) and the overall size of your bank (when saving). The buffers are destroyed after use and the memory is returned to the system for re-use.

On the PC this isn't a problem as RAM is allocated to applications dynamically as and when it is needed. Prior to OS-X it isn't the same on Macs and you need to have a huge amount of RAM in your machine to be able to do anything useful. The CM Strings patch is nearly 15mb on disk - to account for the temporary buffers needed then you have to double that and then add around 5mb for the RAM DS404 needs for itself.

So, if your sequencer defaults to a preferred size of 100mb you will need to put in something like 135mb to be able to use 15mb of DS404 patches. Having said that there is absolutely no reason at all why you can't set to the preferred RAM allocation equal to your installed memory less 40mb for MacOS. If this doesn't cover it, you don't have enough RAM in your system to use that size of patch.

Just to note, if you have issue 51 or 52, the revised patches are on there.

Dave...thanks...I'll make sure I have enough RAM allocated to Cubase per your formula.

Red...thanks, too. Unfortunately here in the States we're still on issue 50. I'll look for 51 as soon as it hits this side of the Atlantic.

Hey GM,
Issue 51 should be out in Cleveland in about a week. My subsription issue 52 should arrive tomorrow. Ridiculous isn't it? I mean you would think they would be able to get 4 or 5 copies to the store down the road within a week of them getting my copy to me in stead of 5 weeks.
Anyway if you can't wait a week and you live on the eastside email me

I'm in Shaker Heights. I usually pick up CM at Joseph Beth at Shaker Square or Border's in Solon.

And here I thought I was the only one in NE Ohio into this stuff!
