i'm looking for a good freeware compressor that works real well with vocal track. i'm mixing down in cool edit pro 2.0 & although i have most of the good freeware compressors (blockfish, etc.), this is the first time i'm compressing a vocal track. the track is hip-hop & if anyone has some good settings (ratio, thres, att, release) that have worked well with a certain compressor s in the past would be appreciated. thanks

work well with certain material, not compressors. Blockfish is good, I use it or occasionally Endorphin or even Crunchessor on vocs. You need to find the best settings for your track, there´s not much we can do. One thing that helps is proper monitoring system, I prefer to use cans when doing very small adjustments.(ratio, thres, att, release)

My favourite is T-SLEDGE, which has excellent presets for vox, mastering, etc; and is a good general use multiband. Also SlimSlowSlider's C3Multiband does a good job.
You might think these overkill, but I have found using a single band comp for my vox produced odd effects at times; whereas T-SLEDGE made them sit properly in the mix..
Try a number out, and see what works well for you.
kjaerhus Classic Comp is a reasonable one as well, and lo CPU..
:)

The Buzzcomp Free bundle has a compressor called Gene Comp (I think). That's good for vocals, and a lot of other things too.
