What do you think of effects with fractal behaviour

I just had a idea to couple some vst-effects with cellular machines and fractals. That could cause a nice variation over time (unpredictible). Think for an example of a filter thats cutoff frequency is controlled over time by fractal generator.

What do you think?

i use the nusofting Kaotica filter quite a lot. i find it very effective if applied over a straight 16 or 8 pattern and let the filter have it sway

so #1 it's been done
but it is a good idea and I wish a lot more controls were fractal based, esp LFO's

Nusofting has a 'seed' and various other controls it would be much more clear if there was some feedback such as Urs dislays with Filterscape to see what is actually going on.

#2 the behavior does not come across as random, it's much more like two lfo's at different frequencies controlling the same source -- which I guess is why there's not a great crying need for what a fractal pattern can provide. It's undoubtedly much easier to control the control features we're accustomed to and given the layering available in plugs like Filterscape, an output 'close enough' is possible.

fractals are mathematical constructs that deliver very smooth chaos behaviour. and they have infinite precision no matter how far you zoom in or out. Just like analog hardware indeed. And also because fractal are from a complex nature you could modulate a set of parameters by a single fractal. In that case they would be somehow realated to each other but still random (controled chaos?). It was just an idea to inspire people.

Of course you can get close results by random generating a set of numbers and interpolating smoothly between them (linear for instance) that would have indeed a very similar effect.

I had a metahost with the same functionallity in mind. Has the same effect but is easier to configure but only works with vst(i) plugs.

I like where you are going with this one, but it might be harder to apply it to a concrete scenario...

Fractals have a strangely beautiful quality to them. Is it posible to use fractals to add subtle non-liearities in systems that otherwise sound bland and digital? Maybe room reverb or tube distortion emulation?
