Scoring/simple sequencer for 10 year old children?

I hace a relative with young doughters that are classically trained pianists, and he wants to know what a good application would be for them to use to compose and also read/print sheet music. I obviously recommended Sibelius since it seems a standard, but is this appropriate for their age group? Can someone give me any advice?

Thanks!

Awave studio is a good one... (if you want to make MIDIs)

I recently installed Overture SE from my GPO Extras disc. I'm quite impressed at how simple everything is at first glance. Just the page, staff and score and a row of icons at the top for notes, ties etc.

But there's a ton of stuff 'under the hood' for more complex arrangements.

But Overture (until V4 is released, of course) doesn't create any sound of itself. It directs MIDI to whatever device/software you want to host the instruments. So unless you want to set that all up beforehand for them it might be a bit too complex.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but NEVER spam a thread of mine with your shit applications again.

Thanks.

I am fond of midisoft

It doesn't have vst support or anything, and for my purposes it can be slow, as I end up importing my midi files into Tracktion before doing any 'production'.

But it is the most intuitive notation editor I have ever seen, and I think I have demo'd all of them.

In any case, for general midi stuff, it is easy as pie. Just the thing for a talented kid to work out ideas with.

I would have him have a look at Band in a box http://www.pgmusic.com/bandbox.htm

As a tutorial type of thing for kids I think it beats everything else on the market.

Actually the 'kids' are way beyond most people I know by far, way beyond me, playing since they were 3 or so, but they really don't have sequencer experience. I have Band in a Box but I don't really think it's along the lines of what they want to do (compose classical piano). Logic Hit Kit is really simple and I can see them getting what they want out of that, and it's free (well, I'll give them my copy that cost $20 or something).

BTW, @ aafuss, I'm pretty damn sure 'Logic' is a registered trademark and you better change your app's name and ad items, because saying stuff like 'Logic for PC is back' or whatever is really pushing it.

Sibelius Compass looks interesting - specifically designed to teach kids composition:

My daughter has had no problems getting to grips with Traktion but it doesn't have scoring as such.

yeah me too :)

I like the interface on the Compass sequencer too, very well laid out and clear - I assume it's just using basic midi, no VST's etc, but useful for educational purposes. (Bit confusing that they call it the "Tracker" though)

edit: must be using midi as it says at the bottom of the page:
Students develop music in the Tracker, and can also transfer it to Sibelius 3 or any sequencer.
