Rock band The Magic Numbers walked out of an appearance on TV show Top of the Pops because they thought the presenter made a joke about their weight.

In rehearsals, Richard Bacon said the band had been put in a "fat melting pot of talent" - and they left in protest at the "derogatory, unfunny remarks".

The group said they felt they had to "make a stand and leave".

But a BBC spokesman said Bacon tried to apologise and was referring to their status, not their appearance.

.... the band said on their website.

"We didn't take this decision lightly but we stand by it."

Were the "derogatory, unfunny remarks" relating to the "talent" "pot" or "melting" bit?

I like the Magic Numbers. Good tunes.

I also like the fact that they are not skinny pretty boys and girls, but a bunch of normal folks (even if their overweight ratio is on the high side :D)

I also like the fact that they buggered off and caused a problem when some slimey TOTP presenter thought he would be very clever by cracking a fat joke. Probably the pinnacle of his intellect.

.... and don't kid yourself that this is a misunderstanding. Weasel boy thought he'd impress the floor crew with an idiotic schoolboy gag and it backfired on him big-style.

Good.

It's not normal to be so sensitive about your weight that you pull an unprofessional stunt like walking out of your gig because you can't take a joke.

It's also not normal to have a body mass (in kg) to height squared (in meters) ratio greater than 25. That's not only abnormal (albeit, quite common), but it's also unhealthy.

I couldn't care less if it really was a misunderstanding or some lame joke from Bacorn. I just thought it was funny when they said they didn't take it lightly :)

:hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
Indeed - I know it's nasty but maybe they got pissed off as they thought their agent said that they'd be presented 'with' bacon (hopefully a mountain of bacon butties) not 'by' bacon - & his poor taste joke whilst they were all peckish & low on blood sugar was the last straw.

am I gonna get flamed by the local weight watchers memers now?

that was f**king brilliant. I only hope it was unintentional.

I just wish more bands walked out of TOTP, MTV and all the other banal, soylent green, identikit slop that passes for music programming on TV.

It's like walking out of playschool. Who gives a shit about 'professionalism' when it's been replaced with disney kids on greed.

Why did we bother with the 60's, punk and Public Enemy when the highlight of TV is to walk out of TOTP's?

Three cheers for people of tonnage who sit on the plastic ken's and barbie's who pass for musicians these days. People can loose weight but plastic is there for life.

Fight the plastic!

Bacon is a sarky twat at the best of times but I bet it stop the band heading down the pub for a pint or 12!

No such thing as bad publicity!!! ;)

I really don't know much about TOTP, but I totally agree....there use to be a tme when we heard the music first, bought it, then went and saw the band...I won't say videos are like putting the horse before the cart, but imo the result is about the same as putting the cart on the horse....the one thing about music I don't agree with my wife on. She loves videos, I can't be bothered... Live video concerts are a whole different matter though....

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
