What IS StudioPhonic, really?

Hi,

I am - like everyone, I suppose - eagerly awaiting the much talked-about ST upgrade...but in the process a new (?) product has been thrown into the discussion: StudioPhonic. Is this a scaled-down ST2.1, focussing on 'band' instruments, or what? Or will it actually *exceed* ST2.1 in terms of sound quality etc as far as these types of sound are concerned?

I find myself writing & recording music using mainly 'traditional' band instruments - bass, guitar, pianos, organs, keyboards etc - and I was wondering whether or not it would make sense to aquire both SP and ST2.1?

What I am actually missing the most in ST2 is (and this is rather hard to describe, not having the vocabulary of a guitar player  ) a 'solo electric guitar with a nice tube-ish sound to it, not clean, but not overly crunched or distorted either'. I find all the guitars in ST2 to be either too clean or too .... far-out  , not sounding like the "guitar in my head" at all. So I still find myself reverting to the samples of my old Ensoniq ASR10 whenever a solo guitar line is called for....

Will StudioPhonic (or ST2.1 for that matter) help me?

In ST2, You got the built in guitar amp simulation, so you can tweak the sounds and tweak and tweak and tweak ;) - have you tried that already?. If that isn't enough for you you can purchase Amplitube to tweak and teak and tweak it more. And then, of course there is the Sonic Capsules for Electric Guitars from Sonic Reality, check it out.

That should give you some thing to work with...

Studiophonik is a more focused product. It will have more detailed drums, bass, guitars and keys and also some brass. The ST sample set is much wider in scope (i.e. covers more instrument groups) but not as detailed. If you’re mostly using traditional “band instruments”, Studiophonik should be right up your alley. It could still make sense to get ST 2 to have a wider palette of sounds, though.

There are of course other guitar libraries out there, like LPC from www.prominy.com , Lyrical Distortion from www.beladmedia.com , Giga Clean Guitars from www.vintaudio.com , Overdrive from www.vsl.co.at , ’56 Strat from www.soundsonline.com and a new one, Raging Guitars from www.bigfishaudio.com .

As Telebunke says, sometimes it might be better to start with a clean sound and add FX with an amp sim plugin.

In the 18 months or so since I first heard of Studiophonik on these boards, I think we've had 1 kick and snare demo.... how about something to tide us (me) over with? I'd love to hear the quality, if for nothing else than to know I could trash all the software I've bought in the last year and a half trying to make my own SP sound set... A little bass and piano trio perhaps? make it a Rhodes and make my day...

18 months? What the...

Studiophonik is coming this year. I think you guys will find it to be worth the wait. We only sampled more new instruments in all of this time so it got even better than what was announced (a trend these days for us it seems). Demos will come in not too long. Thanks for your patience.

Next thing is gonna be Sampletankophonik. It'll be as many instrument groups as in SS2, but it'll be deep as Philharmonik and Studiophonik.

Prominy is amazing, I'm listening to the demos and it sounds better than a real electric guitar.

I've also the VSL Overdrive, and the Bela D Media. They're all amazing. Very difficult to choose. At the first sight the most complete and detailed it's the Prominy, 110 GB of samples (60GB for GS3 and 50GB for GS2.5). It's very impressive. Anyone has tried one of this products?

Will it come with Duke Nukem bundled with it?

The "prelude" group buy was a huge step forward and we should have the rest of it early this year IIRC. The Prelude sets from that Group Buy are available on esoundz.com and there are samples there to listen to. Can't wait to see the rest!

Yeh I was part of that group buy. Patiently waiting now :) and dont really care if it doesnt include duke Nukem.

I also know its not Sonic Reality decision to release or not as its an IK product. Just curious if Squids knows anything further.

FFS, I was about to respond to this line with:
"What upgrades? I haven't heard anything"
...and then realized the post was from almost 3 AND A HALF YEARS AGO!! :x :bang: :tantrum:

Sounds good. I believe the GB threads go away since they are in Market Place but I think we are indeed looking at early this year which is in my "waiting patiently" (but in my case I might be fibbing, I'm a bit impatient!) basket too. Can't wait!

I've also got an ASR10. That great electric lead in it was essentially a very short looped dry sample fed through the amazing FX that were on board. The ASR10 had some of the best FX going. Ensoniq's DP FX box was based on those algorithms.

As stated above, the onboard SampleTank FX are great and can be really tweaked. But if you're really looking for great guitar tone, run the sample through an FX package like Amplitube.

So many plugins, so little time...

This thread is from 2005!

But it goes to show you how unforgivably long we've taken on this product. Honestly, it was a very hard one to do. But we HAVE released most of it (sounds only) in that Prelude Group Buy. The rest of the sounds and the beautiful GUI will be released in Q1 of 2009 as promised. It would be the EARLY part of it but we have this thing called the NAMM show that always interrupts production because you've got to SHOW WHAT YA GOT! IK has something really BIG showing at NAMM this year and no one is probably expecting it but it's HOT! I can't wait. More than one thing in fact that is new and not far from release either... a good new trend. SPK is part of an old trend both IK and SR had about announcing something way too soon and it has been hard to fit it BACK into mutual schedules. We tested its appeal in that prelude group buy and sure enough it was a hit! So, it's BACK and will be available in March.

However, it isn't IK's fault. It's Sonic Reality's. We have to put the final touches on the sounds before it can be released and it is being worked on amidst everything else that's scheduled. I WILL tell you this though. We're planning a LOT more releases in ST format for 2009 with SR sounds and SampleTank engine. There's SPK and there might even be... a sequel to something else. :o Also something completely new never announced and totally exciting! Then maybe ReTank will be officially released as well through IK. Oh and another vintage piece along the lines of SampleMoog and SampleTron. Don't worry. We're picking up the pace! Hope you've saved up since 2005! ;)
