I'm in the middle of the biggest dry spell creatively that I've ever had.

I realise that my writing hasn't improved over the last two years, I don't feel I'm learning anything and I'm not even enjoying the struggle to write anything of worth.

I kinda can't be arsed anymore.

So I've decided to sell some synths and try and go back to basics. So there should be some bargains to be had over the next few weeks :)

Once I've sold a few, I'll see whether I want to sell the rest (which I doubt).

Ho hum... :? Not sure what the point of this post is, but that's very in keeping with KVR...

Dry spells suck...big time. :(

I tend to do sound design or sampling if im stuck, that way im still 'keeping my hand in' and often new sounds can lead to a new tune, but im pretty much in the same way here now.

Cant force it tho...

id sell at least half of my stuff too, but they are nearly all NFR's :hihi:

anyway, chin up old bean, you'll get back into it soon (and dont be so down on yourself, i think your skills have improved greatly since i first heard your stuff  )

cheers :) I'm no doubt just wallowing in self pity...

when your dry spell gets to 35 years like mine mate ... THEN you can worry ...

... just learn to enjoy the tinkering and playing around rather than worrying about an end result ...

... and as krim says ... often turning your hand to something different but related can help trigger ideas off ...

slainte :D rob

Hope you can get through it OK. Nothing worse than sitting at a computer with nothing flowing....

I'm not sure that your writing hasn't improved. That's not something I'd agree with. I wouldn't know where to start with the acid lines you produce :o :D

Getting back to basics could be a good idea - i find the huge amount of synths and the even larger amount of presets to wallow through is a large barrier to creativity. Try it and see if it helps :ud:

If you're REALLY desparate, you could do a collaboration with me and that'll make you appreciate how good you are :hihi:

Hahahaha, taking stock. hahahahaha.

Any other swede here finding "taking stock" funny? :)

Just try and have some fun doing anything music related. Like krim suggested, sound design etc... The keyword is fun. Don't focus on making tracks, just... have fun.

If you don't get any fun out of doing anything music related, do something else for a while - painting, giffing, writing, disco dancing ;)... Maybe your appetite will return after a while.

I like your music a lot, and so do many others here, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Post

You might also try your hand at a different kind of music, or just listen to other kinds of music than the ones you're used to.

Post

Or just take stock!

Seriously though, why struggle to make music? If it's not enjoyable, why even try? Do something else instead. Usually, the joy of making music comes back to you.

Post

ditto.

I put mine down to

A:going thru the worse house selling/movingMare.

B:(but as important as A:)not having an outlet, commercially.

C:not having a writing partner to vibe off of in a real sittuation, sure netjams are fun but totally isolated.

hope you get it sorted soon, personally I think your music has improved (if not stuck on 1 style, i too am guilty)

maybe if you was getting tracks released on albums or media you would feel happier, I know I would.

peace :)

Take a break - go download a copy of Terragen and spend some time making landscapes. Then think about the music that would go with each one and off you jolly well go :)

Derek.
Less than 1000 posts and writer's block has set in :-(

cheers for the votes of confidence guys. I just don't feel like I'm making any progress, if anything I'm going backwards - I listened to an old CD I put together the other day and was surprised to find that although the production was shite, the tracks themselves were simpler but probably better for it.

I suppose we all tend to get this way at some point. I've found a great outlet with my band; but even when we're not gigging and I've got all my equipment at home and there's still no inspiration I tend to work on patches; maybe figuring out how to program that synth I had to have and is just sitting on my hd.
don't give it all up, I like your stuff. don't be so hard on yourself.
