Hi

This is weird - a few years old CD (original Meshell Ndegeocello's Plantation Lullabyes) just doesn't play anymore. Well, it does for 3s and stops...

I checked the surface, there isn't a scratch or anything else on it (I'm pretty pedantic with my cds).

Why?

Same behavior in different CD players? Dirty lens?

Don't do it my way.

just about to say the same thing. I have several CD players, and 1 in particular is "fussy"...often telling me "No disc" (but! but! I've just put one in!). The offending discs always work fine in other players.

Bin it.

burn it, don't return it.

Do you have Nero CD burner? This has some CD testing, with surface testing. Perhaps (read; 'I bet') the CD has gone to waste...
I've had this once, on a CDR.

a lot of cd players simply dont like cdr's

Does it play in your cd rom? I have had a similar problem where my cd player (14yrs old) refuses to read certain cds that play just fine in my cd rom. What I do is to make a copy of the original cd. The new one always plays fine.

Ciao.

Explanation:

it's the car cd player I'm talking about and the other cds work just fine (even burned cds and mp3s).

This particular cd (Plantation...) has been working fine for years (in this cd player, too).

I'll check it on other systems, but I still find it really weird.

Might be a surface problem as you say (I'll check it with Nero)

thanks

Dunno if can help...but have u tried to extract the audio from this cd in particular :?: Eventually, do so using EAC with the "Secure Method" selected and "Detection Accuracy" (in the DriveOption menu)set to "Secure". See if u get errors while extracting. :)

I tried several players now.

EAC doesn't even recognize it as a cd of any kind. (Explorer - nada).

Apparently this cd is kaputt.

Look at the CD in the light and don't look for scratches look for a wierd discoloration in the reflective surface itself. It basically looks like the reflective part actually melted or distorted in some wierd way which in turn makes the discs unplayable. I've experienced this with two DVDs and one CD, all only within a few days of getting them. Luckily I was able to return the offending discs because it happened so quickly.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Funkybot: Doesn't that usually happen when they're subjected to sunlight?
