THE STUDIO 1969
Free REAPER Recording Template
A free REAPER session template based on British studio console workflows commonly associated with late-1960s recording practices.
The template is built entirely with stock REAPER plug-ins and is not tied to any specific REAPER theme or GUI. It works with the default REAPER layout and remains fully compatible with custom skins.
This template is provided as a starting point and is expected to be adjusted per source material, arrangement, and recording approach.
What's included
The session includes a structured track layout covering common studio needs, including drums, bass, electric guitars, keys and piano, lead vocals, and backing vocals.
Apollo Theme- you can still find it on the STASH.
Tracks are preconfigured using stock REAPER processing appropriate to each role. Routing supports common stereo and multi-output drum workflows.
Seven FX buses are preconfigured using stock REAPER tools, including plate, room, and chamber reverbs; delay and slapback effects; doubling utilities; and parallel saturation. Global sends are already routed and require only level adjustment.
A reference master bus chain is included, organized as a multi-stage signal flow intended for modern delivery levels.

Design assumption (important)
This template is built around a −3 dB reduction applied to audio item gain before mixing.
Modern recordings typically arrive hotter than the gain structure assumed by vintage-style processing. Without reducing item gain, compression, saturation, and master bus stages will be driven earlier than intended.
All dynamics, EQ, saturation, and routing decisions in this template assume this −3 dB reduction is in place. Track faders can be raised later as needed.
Troubleshooting reference.
If the mix becomes overly saturated or distorted, verify that audio item gain has been reduced by −3 dB before adjusting any processing.
If reverbs feel overly dense or washy, reduce send levels or adjust room size parameters.
If the mix feels overly dark or bright, adjust individual track EQ before making global changes.
If dynamics feel constrained, review compression thresholds and ratios. The reference approach favors movement and headroom over heavy gain reduction.
Compatibility
REAPER 5.0 or later
All processing uses stock REAPER plug-ins included with the DAW.
