-
Sonatura Audio

Sonatura Audio has announced the release of Superhet, a new plugin that they say brings the process of Heterodyning into the DAW world for the first time.

Superhet Features:

  • Utilizes Both Sum and Difference Pitches.
  • Full ADSR Control.
  • Selectable Waveforms.
  • Pure-Pitch Based, Not Note-Based.
  • Pitch Envelope Controls.
  • All Parameters Can Be Automated.
  • Visualizer Display Shows All Active Pitches.

Overview

Originally invented by Reginald Fessenden in 1901 as a means to assist in hearing certain radio transmissions, Heterodyning involves creating two new frequencies from two input frequencies. One of the new frequencies is the sum of the two inputs, and the other is the difference. So, for example, if you have one input tone of 440 Hertz, and another of 643 Hertz, the resulting heterodyned frequencies will be 1,083 Hz (the sum), and 203 Hertz (the difference). The original signals are no longer present.

While the new frequencies are obviously exactly calculable, they seem somewhat random until you're used to the process. Superhet allows you to create heterodyned frequencies using only a MIDI keyboard, and also includes a switchable pitch envelope, and ADSR controls for amplitude.

Experiment with it at first, then as you get used to the process, start creating new types of music that have never before been heard.

Pricing & Availability

Superhet is available for free for macOS and Windows in VST3 and AU plugin formats.
