1-Grain is a granular audio processor designed for straightforward operation with minimal interface complexity. The plugin provides real-time granular synthesis capabilities through a simplified three-parameter control scheme.

Core Functionality

The processor operates by segmenting incoming audio into small grains and redistributing them across time with various manipulation parameters. A 5-second circular buffer continuously records the input signal, allowing grains to be triggered from different temporal positions within this buffer.

Control Parameters

Freeze Control:

• Halts buffer recording while maintaining current buffer contents.
• Enables sustained manipulation of captured audio segments.
• Useful for creating static textures from transient source material.

Character Selection:

• Delayish: Optimized for delay-like effects with longer grain durations and smoother transitions.
• Texture: Balanced setting suitable for general granular processing applications.
• Glitchy: Shorter grains with higher density and increased parameter randomization.

FX Parameter:

• Single macro control mapping to multiple internal granular parameters.
• Low values: sparse grain triggering, minimal pitch deviation.
• Mid values: increased grain density, moderate pitch and temporal variations.
• High values: dense grain clouds, extended pitch ranges, complex feedback routing.

Technical Implementation:

• Grain density: 0.1 to 50+ Hz trigger rate.
• Grain duration: 30ms to 600ms depending on character setting.
• Pitch range: ±24 semitones with musical interval quantization.
• Buffer length: 5 seconds at 48kHz sample rate.
• Concurrent grains: up to 15 simultaneous voices.
• Built-in DC blocking and soft limiting.

Audio Processing Chain

Input signal passes through gain staging, optional feedback routing, and granular processing engine. Output includes integrated stereo reverb with comb filter topology. All parameter changes employ smoothing algorithms to prevent audio artifacts during real-time adjustment.

Applications

Suitable for delay effects, texture generation, rhythmic stuttering, pitch manipulation, and ambient sound design. The simplified interface makes it appropriate for both studio production and live performance contexts where quick parameter adjustment is required.
