The Ampex 351 — A Studio Legend

The Ampex 351 started life as the amplifier inside Ampex's 1950s tape machines, built around high-voltage tube stages and large input and output transformers. Engineers eventually realized those electronics had a sound worth using on their own. They pulled the modules from the tape decks and repurposed them as standalone tube preamps, and the tone quickly became a studio favorite.

Why?
Because the 351 delivered a rare mix of warmth and harmonic richness. Its large transformers added weight and body, while the tube stages stayed smooth and open at lower levels and bloomed into thick, musical drive when pushed.
